Looked like this thing with Jennifer wasn’t over yet.
“I’ll have Bruce assign some people to keep an eye on you around the clock.” Eugene’s voice dropped low, serious. “She’s cornered now. Cornered people do crazy things.”
“You really think I need protection?” Chloe raised an eyebrow, glancing at him.
Eugene didn’t smile back. He reached out and took her hand, his expression steady. “I know you’re more than capable. You don’t need anyone watching your back. But let me be selfish here. The woman I love–I can’t stand the thought of her getting hurt, even a little. You understand?”
Chloe looked at him, caught off guard. She hadn’t expected those words. For the first time in a long while, she felt what it was like to be truly cared for. Cherished. Maybe this was what being loved actually felt like.
Back in the day, she’d faced death like it was nothing. Never hesitated when survival was on the line. Even after Robert was born–she’d changed in some ways, sure, but not in that.
Now, Eugene’s words washed over her like warm water on a freezing day. Soaked through. Warmed her to the core.
His hand was big enough to wrap around hers completely. And warm. Warm enough to reach places she hadn’t realized were cold.
“Alright,” she said quietly, after a long moment.
At Myers Estate, Charles was beside himself over Jennifer and Jenarth disappearing. He was so furious he could barely breathe–nearly passed out from the rage.
Greg stayed close, tending to him, while Blaine came personally to run some tests. Seeing how weak Charles looked, Blaine let out a sigh. “Charles, your body’s been through enough. The fact that you’re still here is a medical miracle. You can’t keep letting things like this stress you out.”
“I won’t let anyone hurt Chloe.” Charles‘ voice shook with indignation, and he broke into another violent coughing fit.
Blaine frowned at that. He prepared some medicine himself and made sure Charles drank it.
“Get this down. It’ll help.” Blaine paused, then added, “And for what it’s worth–I won’t let anyone hurt her either. This old body of mine might be worn, but it’s still got some fight left.”
Charles blinked, caught off guard. Then, after a moment, he let out a long sigh and managed a tired smile.
“With so many people looking out for her… doesn’t matter if this old man isn’t around anymore.” His breathing steadied as he spoke, the words coming easier now. “My time’s coming. I’ve lived long enough. I’m grateful to you, Blaine. Truly.”
“Don’t thank me. You’re Chloe’s grandfather. If death himself came knocking, he’d have to go through me first.” Blaine patted Charles on the shoulder, voice rough with feeling. “Get some rest. Call if you need anything.”
‘I’m fine.” He sighed. Then his phone rang.
Hope flickered across his face–maybe news about Jennifer. He gestured for Greg to put it on speaker.
‘Go ahead. What is it?”
A subordinate’s voice came through.
‘Mr. Myers, we’ve got movement on that hotel guest from six years ago. We’ve narrowed down the check- ins and check–outs from that day. One more round of verification and we should have a positive ID on who it was that night.”
Charles‘ whole body tensed. Excitement surged through him.
‘Good. Put more people on it. I don’t care what it costs–I’ll have my assistant wire the funds immediately. Get me that information as fast as you can.”
‘Understood, sir. We’ll verify everything thoroughly before we come back to you. You’ll have the final answer soon.”
