Jenarth had frozen on the spot. His original plan had been to come up with some excuse, lure Robert away from the academy grounds. But before he could even get a word out, Robert had already asked him where his mother was.

That calm look on his face–it was like he’d known Jenarth was coming all along.

Jenarth spun around. Robert was leaning against that broken–down chair, dust all over him, and he was laughing. Actually laughing.

Something hot flared in Jenarth’s chest. Anyone could laugh at them. But not Robert.

This kid wasn’t even Arthur’s blood. And still, Arthur was obsessed with him. With his mother. Why did they get everything so easily?

Jenarth walked over. Stared down at the smirk curling on Robert’s lips. He knew that look. Mocking them.

“Laugh all you want. Won’t be long now.” His voice came out cold. “Your mother’s done. You’re done. Today’s your last day.”

“Oh no. I’m terrified.” Robert widened his eyes, put on a scared face.

Jenarth almost smiled. Almost. Then Robert laughed. Full–on laughed.

“Come on. I couldn’t hold it in. You really think you know how this ends? What if today’s your last day?”

The almost–smile froze on Jenarth’s face. He stared at Robert, something crawling up his spine. How was this kid still laughing?

Was he stupid? Or was he faking it–trying to look brave when he was falling apart inside?

It had to be an act.

Jenarth crouched down, brought himself level with Robert. Curled his own lips into a smile. “Robert. Don’t get cocky. Your mother’s walking right into this. And I’m going to make you watch while my mother tears her apart. With you here? She’ll do whatever we say. Get on her knees. Beg.”

Robert let out a short laugh. Turned his face away. Done talking.

The dismissal stung. Jenarth pushed on. “The money. The power. It’s all ours after this. Your mother hands it over. No questions. Every single thing my mother went through–your mother pays for it today. On her

knees.”

Something flickered in Robert’s eyes. He turned back, looked at Jenarth.

“Today, you’ll regret it.” Jenarth’s voice dropped. “Everything you’ve done. Just wait. You’ll cry.” He leaned in. “You should’ve been dead a long time ago.”

Robert raised an eyebrow. That look again. Disdain. “Jenarth. Use your head for once. All of this? It’s your mother’s doing. Hers. Not anyone else’s.”
