Jennifer barely noticed. She was already looking past him, grinning at Robert. “You see that, you little brat? You and your mother? I’m about to blow you both sky–high.”

Robert’s voice stayed calm. “My mother won’t let that happen.”

“She can’t even save you. You think she can stop me?” Jennifer’s confidence swelled. Victory was close. She could taste it. “She’s nothing.”

Jenarth tugged at her sleeve. “Mom. What if she brought people? What if Arthur comes?”

At the name, Jennifer’s face went dark.

“Then he dies too. If he shows his face, they all go up together. Her grin turned sharp, ugly. “If I can’t have him? No one does. Let them all burn.”

Jenarth tried to smile along with her, but his face felt stiff.

“Mom-” He tried to hug her again. But she’d already turned away, focused on Robert.

“Your turn, kid. And you’d better cry loud. Make it good. Otherwise, I might have to stick a few knives in you to help things along.” She grabbed Robert by the collar, yanked him up off the floor, and dragged him out like he weighed nothing.

Robert didn’t fight. He knew Jennifer was past reason. As she hauled him through the door, he glanced back at Jenarth—-still standing there, frozen, watching.

Robert’s lips curved into the faintest smile. He didn’t make a sound. Just mouthed two words.

“Run. Now.”

Jenarth stood rooted to the spot, staring at the door long after they’d gone through it.

Run?

What did Robert mean? Why would he need to run?

His mother had everything under control. She’d planned it all. There was no reason to run.

That kid was just trying to mess with him. Get in his head. He wouldn’t fall for it.

Jenarth told himself that. Firmly. Soon, Chloe would show up. She’d cry. She’d beg. She’d get on her knees in front of his mother. And his mother would be the one standing over her, victorious.

The thought made something smug settle into Jenarth’s expression.
