Chapter 497 Chloe Arrives Alone

Chloe pulled up to the coordinates Jennifer had given her. She parked along the coast and stepped out of

the car.

The signal out here was weak. She tried Jennifer’s number anyway. Dead.

Phone in hand, she walked toward the water.

It was an old dock. Abandoned. Decaying. The air hung thick with rot and salt.

No one in sight. After a few minutes of walking, she stopped and called out.

“Jennifer. I’m here. Alone. Like you asked. This is between us. Stop hiding and come out.”

Silence. Nothing but the lapping of water against the pilings.

Then–crunch. Footsteps on dry brush. Chloe’s hearing had always been sharp. She turned.

Jennifer emerged from the shadows, dragging Robert behind her.

The moment Chloe saw him, something in her chest seized.

He’d been hurt. His face was flushed, marked. His hands were bound.

“Robert!” Her voice broke as she moved to rush forward.

“Don’t.” Jennifer’s command cut through the air like the blade she now pressed against Robert’s throat.

Chloe froze. Her eyes locked on that knife.

“One more step, and I slit his throat. Kids are fragile, right? One good cut should do it.” Jennifer’s laugh echoed off the rotting wood.

Chloe’s grip on her phone tightened. She measured the distance. The knife. Jennifer’s stance. Even with her speed, charging in blind wouldn’t save him in time.

She held her ground. Kept her voice steady. “Jennifer. I came alone. Whatever this is between us, leave him out of it.”

“He’s my leverage. Why would I leave him out?” Jennifer grabbed the back of Robert’s neck, forcing his head up. The knife pressed down.

A thin red line appeared against his skin.

“Let him go.” Chloe’s voice rose, barely controlled. “I’ll let you walk. Just let my son go.”

“I’m okay, Mom.” Robert’s voice came out steady, trying to calm her.

Chloe’s eyes went colder. She should have ended this woman when she had the chance.

“What do you want, Jennifer?” No more words. Just ice.

“Is that how you ask?” Triumph flickered in Jennifer’s eyes. “I don’t hear any sincerity.”

Chloe said nothing.

“Because of you, I lost everything. Now I’m taking it back.” The blade pressed harder against Robert’s neck. “You want your son to live? Then get on your knees. Kneel and apologize. Beg me.”

The words dripped with satisfaction. A vicious smile spread across her face.

“On your knees. Apologize. Beg.” Jennifer was almost laughing now.

“Mom, don’t listen to her. Take her down. Don’t worry about me.” Robert’s voice cut through, angry.

That did it.

“You little–say that again. Think I won’t send you to hell?” Jennifer pressed harder. The red line deepened. Blood beaded at the edge of the blade.

Robert closed his eyes. His face showed nothing. No fear.

“Jennifer. Stop.” Chloe’s voice rang out, sharp.

Jennifer looked up. Raised an eyebrow. “On your knees. Apologize. Beg. If I like what I see, maybe I’ll let him go.”

Chloe saw the look on Robert’s face. Resigned. Ready. She bit down hard.

“Jennifer. I’m offering you a way out. You and Jenarth. Leave this state. Leave the country. Go anywhere. I won’t come after you.” Her voice hardened. “Just let Robert go. I mean it.”
