“Promises? What good are promises to me now, Chloe?” Jennifer’s voice turned cold, flat. “I’ve got nothing left. Nothing to lose. I’m already damned. What’s there to be afraid of?” She pressed the blade harder against Robert’s neck. “You want this kid to live? Then get on your knees. And beg. Keep begging until I’m satisfied. Maybe then I let him go.”

Chloe watched the madness in Jennifer’s eyes and knew she had no choice. She needed to stabilize her first. Keep Robert safe. Then she could deal with her.

“Chloe, don’t drag this out. I don’t have all night. I’m counting to three. If you’re not on your knees by then, you can meet your kid in hell.” Jennifer’s grip on the knife tightened.

“Fine.” Chloe cut her off.

She stepped forward. “You want me on my knees? Fine. If it makes you happy.”

She started to lower herself.

Arthur’s voice cut through the air. The next second, he was there, rushing onto the scene.

His eyes went straight to Chloe. He crossed to her in seconds, grabbing her arm. “No. You’re not doing this. This has nothing to do with you.”

He turned to Jennifer. “Jennifer. This is between us. You want someone to blame? Blame me. I’m the one who messed up. Not her. Not Robert.”

The moment Jennifer saw Arthur, something flickered in her chest. He’d come. If it had been for her, maybe–but no. His eyes had gone straight to Chloe. Hadn’t even glanced her way until he needed to speak to her.

Now he stood there with that look on his face. Pleading. For Chloe.

It made her sick.

“What, Arthur? You’re saying this is my fault?” Jennifer’s laugh was hollow. “What did I do wrong? Everything I did was for you. Was that wrong?”

“Jennifer. Stop lying to yourself. You’ve gone too far down this road. Don’t go further.” Arthur took a step forward. Then another. “This is on me. Let me make it right.”

Jennifer’s eyes went cold. “Stop right there.”

“Jennifer. I hurt you. I know that. I’m sorry. If you need to hurt someone back, hurt me. Leave Robert out of this.” He kept walking. Closing the distance.

“One more step and I swear I’ll slit his throat right in front of you.” The knife pressed harder. Robert’s skin whitened around the blade.

“Why does she get everything? Without even trying? You’re divorced. Why does your heart still belong to her? Why?”

Her voice rose, breaking. “Am I really the one in the wrong here. Arthur? It’s you. You’re the one who couldn’t make up his mind. You had a wife, but you still gave me attention. You made me need you. All of this? It’s your fault. Yours.”

Arthur stood there, watching her spiral. Something in his shoulders gave way. He looked almost relieved. Like a weight lifting.

His voice came out quiet. “I’m sorry, Jennifer.”
