Jenarth grabbed hold of Robert and spotted the detonator that had fallen to the ground nearby. Without hesitating, he lunged for it and snatched it up.
“Mommy, I got it!” Jenarth shouted. Then he spun around and took off running toward Jennifer.
Just as Jenarth was racing toward her, Robert pushed himself up and caught Jenarth by the arm.
“Jenarth, wait–your mom’s not in her right mind.”
Jenarth looked at him. Robert’s face was scraped up from the tackle, blood trickling down his cheek. The detonator was in his own hand now. If he could just get it to his mom, she’d stop all this, wouldn’t she?
“Chloe, you and that little bastard can both go to hell.” Jennifer’s grip on the gun tightened. She’d had the barrel aimed at Chloe, but the moment she saw Robert holding onto Jenarth’s hand, she redirected it toward him instead.
She didn’t hesitate. She pulled the trigger.
“Robert!”
Chloe’s scream cut through the air. It happened so fast she didn’t even have time to react–Jennifer had actually pulled the trigger on Robert.
In that instant, Chloe’s whole world came crashing down.
Eugene felt a sudden ache in his chest. He wanted to say something, but his throat closed up and no words
came out.
Arthur stood there frozen. When he saw the muzzle turn toward Robert, his legs gave out and he dropped to his knees.
Jennifer let out a hideous laugh.
“Chloe, this is my parting gift to you,” Jennifer said with a laugh. “Watch that little bastard die right in front of your eyes.”
She had fired the shot herself, and she’d heard the bullet hit flesh.
Now she just wanted to drink in the devastation on Chloe’s face. The more shattered Chloe looked, the more satisfying this would be.
It was exactly what she’d been waiting for.
Jennifer turned her gaze toward Robert, fully expecting to see the kid crumple from her bullet. But instead, she witnessed the most shocking moment of her entire life.
Robert stood there frozen, staring blankly ahead, his face completely empty.
There was blood all over him–streaked across his shirt, smeared on his cheek.

But none of it was his. The blood belonged to Jenarth, who had thrown himself in front of him.
The second Jennifer registered what she was seeing, her entire body went rigid.
“Jenarth!” she screamed.

Jenarth had tackled Robert. The bullet had struck him square in the chest, and blood was pouring from the wound, soaking through his clothes.
At the sound of Jennifer’s voice, Jenarth turned his head toward her with visible effort. Looking at the stunned expression frozen on her face, for a fleeting moment he saw his sweet, innocent mommy again— not the terrifying stranger she had become.
“Mommy,” Jenarth said weakly, “I want to go home. Back… back to our place.”
He tried to smile, but his body went limp in Robert’s arms.
Robert caught Jenarth as he fell. Even now, he still couldn’t believe that when the gunshot rang out, Jenarth had thrown himself in front of him.
Jenarth, six months younger than him, had actually done something like that.
“Jenarth!” Robert called out, but no one answered him.
Jenarth just lay there, silent and still.
Jennifer stared at the child lying in a pool of blood. She couldn’t process that it was her son who’d fallen.
Refusing to accept it, Jennifer tightened her grip, ready to snap. She realized she still had the gun in her hand. Without hesitating, she raised it again, about to fire at Robert a second time.
A loud bang cut through the air–but this time, it wasn’t Jennifer who’d fired.
The moment Jennifer raised her gun, Chloe had already drawn hers, aimed, and pulled the trigger.
With a crack, the bullet hit Jennifer in the shoulder. The impact knocked her off balance, and the gun slipped from her hand, landing on the ground.
Jennifer looked down at the wound on her shoulder, blood seeping out. She laughed.
“Chloe, why do I always lose? Why?”
“Jennifer, all of this is on you. Even your own kid died because of you,” Chloe said. She walked over to Robert and looked down at Jenarth lying in his arms.
If Jenarth hadn’t grown up under Jennifer’s twisted influence, he might have turned into someone decent, someone with potential. But there are no do–overs in this world.
“Heh, I didn’t lose. I’m not losing.” Jennifer suddenly laughed again. Staring at Jenarth with his eyes closed, she abruptly pulled out another detonator. “Since Jenarth is gone, I’m taking everyone down with him!”
