Chapter 517 Morning After

If it was wrong, then it was wrong. She didn’t care anymore. Even if the whole world turned against her, so
what?
She had a feeling tonight would be a long one.
Two people who’d been lonely for way too long had finally found each other–there was no way they were going to waste a single second.
Outside, the night was beautiful. But honestly? Neither of them even noticed.
The next day, sometime around noon.
Chloe woke up groggy and completely drained. She blinked a few times, staring blankly at the ceiling for a couple seconds before realizing something felt off. Then it all came flooding back. She tried to sit up fast, but her body immediately protested, and she flopped right back down onto the mattress.
That was when her head cleared, and every single detail from the night before played back in her mind. She was so embarrassed she wanted to bury her face in the pillow and never come out.
How did she–someone with actually decent self–control–lose it like that?
Almost on instinct, her hand reached out to touch the spot next to her. Still warm. For a second, she felt relieved Eugene wasn’t there.
What time was it?
Nine? Ten? Judging from the sunlight sneaking through the gap in the curtains, it definitely wasn’t early
anymore.
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand–she’d turned it off last night and just left it there. It took a minute to power back on. Rubbing her forehead, she let out a quiet sigh.
This was what happened when you finally let go. Everything else just slipped your mind.
When the screen finally lit up, Chloe nearly gasped. It was almost 2 PM.
Two in the afternoon? How was that even possible?
Oh no…
Robert was probably losing his mind. Yesterday, when she’d left, she’d just told him she had something to take care of and might be back late. But now… it was already the next afternoon.
And her phone had been off the entire time.
She braced herself for the flood of missed calls and texts the moment it connected. But when it booted up
-nothing.

Not a single message. It was like her phone had been completely silent all night… and all day.
Before she could even process the weird quiet, a voice came from the doorway, clearly amused.
“You’re up?”
Chloe looked over. Eugene was leaning against the doorframe, dressed about as casually as it got–just a white button–down, and not a single button actually done up.
One glance, and yeah. His abs were… really hard to miss.
Chloe quickly looked away. “Could you maybe put some actual clothes on?”
Eugene raised an eyebrow, glancing down at his chest, his stomach… and lower.
“Not like you haven’t seen it before. Last night, you couldn’t keep your hands off me–no takesies backsies.” His tone shifted, turning more serious. “It’s late. You’ve gotta be starving. Come on, get up. I made us something to eat.
“Okay,” Chloe mumbled, still not looking at him. She clutched the blanket tighter. Chloe, Chloe, Chloe… what did you get yourself into?
After throwing on some simple casual clothes and washing up quickly, she made her way to the kitchen. The table was already set.
There was a pot of creamy seafood chowder, warm and fragrant, and a few cute little pastries arranged on a plate.
“Start with something light, settle your stomach first,” Eugene said, setting down a fresh cornmeal pancake he’d just made. His voice turned carnest. “My parents have been wanting to have dinner with you for a while now–it just never worked out. Tonight’s special. I was hoping we could all sit down together, as a family, Celebrate this moment.”
Family.
The word hit her right in the chest.
Looking at the simple, comforting spread on the table, her stomach growled loudly–like it was complaining about being ignored for way too long.
“Okay,” she said softly, and sat down.
As they ate, Eugene started talking about their future together. After everything they’d shared last night- the conversations, and more—he was already thinking ahead. Thinking about them as a real couple.
“When we get married,” he asked quietly, “would you want something traditional, or more modern?” He paused. “And that ring I had made forever ago… can I finally put it on your finger?”
Chloe remembered the ring he’d given her when he proposed before. She knew he’d had it custom–made, and she’d honestly loved the design.
She thought for a moment. “Either’s fine with me. The ending’s the same either way, right?” However it looked, wasn’t it all about walking into the future with the person she loved?

As long as that part was the same, nothing else really mattered.
She’d said it without overthinking, but Eugene listened carefully. Watching her calm expression, he was already making plans in his head.
