He’d been rushing them like crazy, telling them to hurry up, move faster, get there early so they could check out the table setting and the venue themselves.

Hogan was starting to feel like raising this son had been a complete waste. Day after day, the kid teamed

up with that girl to give his own parents a hard time. It wasn’t even five o’clock yet, and he was already being rushed out the door like the house was on fire.

He barely had time to throw on something decent before getting dragged into the car. And his wife? No help at all. She’d slipped into a nice little dress herself, then spent the whole ride nagging him about wearing a proper suit to match. Wasn’t that just dumping the problem in his lap?

When they finally got to the restaurant, Hogan took in the place-the decor was over the top, seriously extravagant. The kind of spot that made you feel like you should be paying by the minute just to breathe the air.

Hogan couldn’t help himself. “Eugene, you’ve really outdone yourself. This is incredible-looks like a holiday spread in here.”

“Well, it is that time of year,” Eugene said smoothly. “Might as well go all out. Whether I actually bring a wife home after the holidays depends entirely on how you two perform tonight.”

Hogan raised an eyebrow and glanced at Rhea. “That sounds like a trick question. Maybe I should just head home now. I’m starting to get nervous.”

Rhea looped her arm through Hogan’s and gave him a little poke. “Oh, relax. It’s not every day the girl brings gifts. Aren’t you even a little curious what she got you?”

“Of course I’m curious.” Hogan’s face turned serious. “My future daughter-in-law’s not just anybody. I definitely want to know what she picked out. That’s the whole reason I came.”

“You’ll find out soon enough.” Rhea shot Eugene a look. “So where is she? Why isn’t Chloe here yet? And what about Robert?”

“I sent Landon to pick up Robert. He just got back from overseas. I figured he should join us tonight-formally introduce him to Chloe.” Eugene couldn’t hide the smile spreading across his

face.

Rhea watched her son’s goofy expression and tugged Hogan’s sleeve. “I think our first try is a lost cause. I mean, sure, his future wife is amazing, but does he have to look like a lovesick puppy practically drooling over it?”

Hogan rolled his eyes at her, then glared for good measure before grabbing her hand and holding it tight.

“Eugene, call and see if she’s on her way. I got her something too-a black card, no limit. Women need money to spend, you know? Freedom to shop. As the elder, it’s my job to make that happen.”

“Mm.” Eugene nodded and stepped away to make the call.

Hogan grabbed Rhea and pulled her aside.

“What’s your problem? Why are you dragging me? Did I say something wrong?” Rhea still hadn’t caught on and tried to shake off his grip.

“Are your eyes working? You see our son over there? He looks completely smitten. It’s hilarious.”

Rhea frowned at him. “I’ll give you one chance to rephrase that. ‘Smitten’? Watch your mouth.”

Hogan cleared his throat and lowered his voice. “Did you not see our son’s neck?” He gestured vaguely toward his own.

“Those marks aren’t going anywhere for at least three days. The man’s combat effectiveness is off the charts.” He spoke with absolute seriousness, complete with hand gestures, making the whole thing ridiculous.

Rhea shot him a look, then suddenly laughed. She glanced over at Eugene.

Now that Hogan mentioned it, she noticed. Even though Eugene was wearing a very proper suit, trying to look all formal, he couldn’t quite hide those reddish marks on his neck. Well, well…

Oh my…

Things were moving fast.

They’d been worried their son might get rejected, might get left behind. But apparently, he was already halfway there-at least, judging by the “battle scars”, he’d made serious progress.

“Not bad, old man. Not bad at all.” Rhea grabbed Hogan’s hand, grinning. “This means our son’s got game. We might even have a grandkid by the end of the year.”

Being called “old man” made Hogan’s expression twitch. He was still a man with a reputation. Even if he’d stepped back from the scene, people still talked about him. And she was calling him “old man”?

“You just said our first try didn’t work out. So why don’t we go for round two tonight? I’ll show you how it’s really done.” Hogan looked at Rhea with a perfectly straight face.

Rhea’s cheeks flushed instantly, but she was a pro at playing it cool.
