Charles was lividangry enough that it looked like he might start throwing things.

Arthur tried to calm him down. So did Hogan and Rhea. Robert was resting in the next room, and the last thing anyone wanted was for Charles to work himself into a state that landed him in a bed down the hall. If something happened to him, Chloe would never forgive herself.

Hearing her name finally got through to him. The fire in his eyes dimmed, just a little.

It was an accident,Eugene said quietly. His voice was calm, but it carried weight. She’s stable now. The only thing that matters is that she makes it through and wakes up.”

Charles studied him for a long moment, then let out a heavy sigh. That girl. Always giving people heart attacks.”

It was latewell past midnightbut Charles refused to leave. Arthur tried reasoning with him. Nothing worked.

You’re here,Charles shot back at Arthur, his tone sharp. You’re not family. I’m her grandfather. Why shouldn’t I stay?

Arthur opened his mouth, then closed it. There was no arguing with that.

So instead, he tracked down a nurse and asked her to check on Charlesblood pressure, heart rate, the works. Charles hadn’t brought his medication with him, and if he was going to insist on sitting here all night, he needed to be stable.

Charles grumbled but took the pills. Then he settled back in his wheelchair, parked himself near the window, and made it clear he wasn’t going anywhere.

The room was getting crowded. Eugene looked at his parents. Take Robert home. Get some sleep. You can come back in the morning.”

Hogan hesitated, then nodded. Eugene was right. They’d be no good to anyone exhausted. He gave Charlesshoulder a brief squeeze, murmured something reassuring to Rhea, and they slipped out quietly, Robert asleep in Hogan’s arms.

That left three people in the room: Eugene, Charles, and Arthur.

Out in the hallway, Greg, Donald, and Bruce sat on the hard plastic chairs, none of them speaking. They’d all come for the same reasonto wait. So they waited.

Inside, the silence stretched,

Arthur’s gaze kept drifting to Eugene. Earlier, when Eugene had stood up to speak to Charles, Arthur had noticed the hickies on his neck. Faint, but unmistakable. He knew exactly what those marks meant.

He was a man. He knew.

Chloe and Eugene were together.

It was obvious now. They made sensebeautiful, successful, matched in every way that counted. Arthur should’ve been happy for her. But if someone had asked him to say that out loud, he wasn’t sure the words would come.

His chest ached with something that felt a lot like regret.

He’d had his chance. He’d let it slip through his fingers, too busy secondguessing himself to hold on to what mattered.

Jennifer’s voice echoed in his headsharp, unforgiving. You did this to yourself. Every mistake, your fault.

He wanted to ask Eugene, If you’re with her, why didn’t you protect her?But the question died on his tongue. He didn’t have the right to ask that.

Charles had made it clearhe was an outsider. To Chloe, he was nothing now. He had no right to question anything.

Dawn broke eventually. Pale light filtered through the blinds. And then Chloe’s eyes opened.

Arthur was on his feet before he realized he’d moved. Eugene was already at the bedside. Charles rolled his wheelchair forward as fast as his arms could push it.

They all stopped a step back, watching, waiting.

Chloe blinked slowly at the ceiling, her gaze unfocused. For a long moment, she didn’t move. Then her lips parted. Wheream I?

Hospital,Eugene said. His voice was steady, but his hand found the rail of her bed, gripping it like he needed something to hold onto.

At the sound of his voice, Chloe turned her head. Her eyes found his face, and she stared at him for a few seconds. Then, softly, she said, YouYou’re really handsome.

Arthur standing nearby, stiffened with awkwardness. He didn’t dare make a sound, let alone step closer. He only watched her from a distance, and that was enoughjust to see her unharmed.

If you think so,Eugene said quietly, you can look at me every day. From now on.He reached out and took her hand.
