Chapter 535 Chloe Has Amnesia
For just a second, Eugene’s expression flickered.
Chloe looked up at him, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “Who are you?”
His face went still.
She’d actually asked that. Was she… Did she have amnesia?

The doctor had warned them. Head trauma could cause damage–memory loss included. But hearing the warning and facing it were two different things. This was harder than he’d expected.
“I’m Eugene.” His voice was steady, certain. “I’m your man.” His grip on her hand loosened, just slightly.
Chloe stared at him, confusion flickering behind her eyes. Then her brow furrowed. She lifted a hand to her head, wincing.
“My… My head hurts.”
She pressed her palm to her temple. “It really hurts. Why can’t I… Why can’t I remember who I am?”
Eugene was already moving. He crossed the room in three strides, yanked the door open, and called for a doctor.
The doctor arrived quickly. He ran through a series of checks–pupils, reflexes, basic questions–and then straightened up, satisfied.
“Nothing to be alarmed about,” he said, tucking his pen back into his coat. “Memory lapses are common after a head injury like hers. Her brain took a hit. It needs time to recalibrate. We’ll adjust her medication, and we’ll monitor her.
“Recovery timelines vary–could be a week. Could be a month. Could be longer. Some patients wake up tomorrow with everything intact. Others take years.”
He glanced at Chloe, already drifting off from the sedative they’d given her. “All things considered, she’s doing well. Another day or two of observation, and she can finish recovering at home. The memory piece -that’s on you all. Help her fill in the blanks.”
He gave a short nod and left. The room settled into quiet.
Chloe was asleep now, her breathing even. She looked better than she had before–less gray, more like herself. But still.
Arthur seized the moment. He crossed to Charles‘ wheelchair and rested a hand on Charles‘ shoulder. “Come on. You’ve been here all night. You need rest. We’ll come back later.”
Charles opened his mouth to argue. “Go home,” Eugene said. Not loud. Just firm,
Charles looked at him, then at Chloe. The fight went out of his shoulders. He reached out and patted the edge of her bed, his voice gruff. “Chloe. I still owe you something. You hear me? You get better.”

Arthur didn’t wait for him to change his mind. He pushed the wheelchair out of the room and down the hall.
The door clicked shut. Eugene was alone with her now.
He stood by the bed, looking down at her face. She needed him. That much was clear. She was fragile right now, vulnerable—she needed someone to ground her, to help her remember. So why, when he’d held her hand earlier, had something felt… off?
It was a strange feeling. Wrong. He’d never felt that way with Chloe before. Not once.
He let out a quiet breath, half laugh, half frustration. What the hell was wrong with him?
On the cruise ship, dawn broke over the water.
The sun crested the horizon, spilling gold across the waves. It was the kind of view people booked this trip for–stunning, cinematic, unforgettable.
The woman on the deck didn’t seem to notice. She stood at the railing, alone, staring out at the sea as it shifted from gray to brilliant blue.
The wind pulled at her hair, tangling it, but she didn’t bother fixing it. She just stood there, watching.
No one else was around this early. The other passengers were still in their cabins, sleeping off the previous night’s entertainment. She had the deck to herself.
The cruise was headed for Sunset Bay. Everyone on board was there to enjoy the trip, to soak up the sun and the sea air. Chloe was there too. But enjoyment wasn’t really on her mind.
The morning wind was cold. She’d thrown on a thin dress, nothing warm, nothing practical. She didn’t
seem to care.
Vincent noticed her absence at breakfast. When someone mentioned she’d gone up to the deck, he went looking for her.
He found her at the railing, hair and dress whipping in the wind. She looked like something out of a painting–untouchable, unearthly. For a moment, he just stood there, watching.
One of his men stepped forward. “Sir, should I get her?”
“Quiet.” Vincent didn’t even look at him.
The man shrank back, said nothing else.
Vincent’s gaze stayed on her. When it became clear she wasn’t moving, he started forward, closing the distance slowly.
The wind cut across the deck, sharp and cold.
“Cold out here.” His voice came from behind her, casual, light. “Standing alone in this wind–that supposed to be fun?”
