Chapter 536 On the Cruise Ship

Chloe didn’t react. Not a flicker of acknowledgment, not even a glance in his direction. It was as if he hadn’t spoken at all.
“Breakfast is ready.” Vincent shrugged out of his jacket and stepped toward her, clearly intending to drape it over her shoulders. “Come on. Let’s go inside.”
His hand was inches from her when she turned–smooth, unhurried, completely ignoring the gesture- and walked past him toward the ship’s interior.
Vincent’s arm hung there for a beat, jacket dangling uselessly. Not delivered. Not acknowledged. Just… left.
He watched her go, that straight–backed, indifferent walk, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“Jennifer sent an update,” he called after her. “Don’t you want to see?”
She kept walking.
He picked up his pace, falling into step behind her. Last night’s candlelit dinner had been a disaster–she hadn’t shown up at all. Locked herself in her cabin. He’d sent a steward with a tray, but the food came back untouched. She’d had some water, ignored the rest.
He knew this version of her. Knew it well.
The little wildcat had been running loose too long. Time to bring her home. Time to teach her some
manners.
The smile faded. He followed her at an easy stroll.
The main dining room was built for a crowd–easily a hundred seats–but this morning it was empty. A full breakfast spread had been laid out on one of the tables, elaborate and excessive.
A steward appeared the moment Chloe walked in, all smiles and practiced deference, guiding her to the
seat.
Chloe looked at the table. There was everything–pastries, eggs, fresh fruit, pancakes, waffles, even some dim sum and congee options off to the side.
“I couldn’t decide,” Vincent said, sliding into the seat across from her, “So I had them bring a little of everything. Take your time. Eat what you want. Afterward, there’s something I want to show you.”
Chloe didn’t respond. Her eyes moyed over the spread, slow and disinterested, until they landed on a glass of milk and a small pastry. The pastry was plain–nothing special–but something about it made her pause. It looked like the kind Eugene used to make for her.
She picked it up. Took a bite.
Vincent’s mouth curved, He reached for a plate near him and started eating,
He’d barely taken three bites when Chloe set down the pastry and pushed back from the table.

He stopped chewing. Watched her start to rise. “Still don’t want to see?” He kept his voice light. “What Jennifer’s been up to?”
Chloe paused. Turned slowly to face him. “What, you got a live feed?”
His expression flickered–just a shadow of annoyance–then smoothed out. “No video. Not yet. But photos? Yes. The whole family, standing around looking miserable. And get this–that Arthur guy from Myers? Looked like he was about to cry.” He picked up a tablet from the table, queued up the images, and set it down where she could see. Waited.
Chloe walked back. Picked up the tablet.
The first photo showed a hospital corridor, the doors to an operating room in the background. Eugene stood front and center, his face hard, his jaw tight. Behind him, his parents. Arthur off to the side. All of them wearing the same expression–worry, fear, the weight of not knowing.
She didn’t need to scroll further. She already understood.
If Eugene met Jennifer–the woman pretending to be her–he’d know. He’d see through it. Unless.
Unless the circumstances were engineered. Unless Jennifer showed up hurt, vulnerable, unable to explain. Wounds took time to heal. A head injury explained gaps in memory, gaps in behavior. It bought time.
She scrolled to the next photo. Eugene’s fist connecting with the wall. The dent in the plaster. The blood on his knuckles.
Another photo showed the woman being wheeled out of surgery. Bandages wrapped around most of her face, but the visible half–that was Chloe’s face. Or close enough.
So that was the play.
Amnesia.
A tired trope. Overused. The kind of plot twist eyen daytime soaps had stopped leaning on. And this was what Vincent had come up with?
