He Cheated, I Rose: Making Him Regret Everything

Wasn’t there talk going around that Chloe and that investor Eugene were getting pretty closeand Arthur wasn’t too happy about it?

Turned out, those rumors were way off.

Eugene made his way over to Arthur and stopped beside him. He glanced around at the people gathered and asked, When’s the funeral set for?

Scheduled for the morning of the day after tomorrow. Notices have already gone out. Guests will start arriving soon.

If you need anything, just tell Bruce. He’ll stay and help out. Landon will be here a little later too.” Eugene kept it simple, not adding anything more.

But that one sentence spoke volumesreally said a lot.

Arthur stood there quietly. Hearing Eugene’s words gave him an unexpected sense of calm deep down. Landon’s position spoke for itselfthe fact Eugene could just casually tell him what to do showed exactly what Eugene’s presence meant.

Arthur knew Eugene had something else going onsome kind of hidden role. Charles had known about it but never told him the details, so Arthur never pushed.

He’d find out when the time was right.

There was something about Eugenea kind of natural authority, like someone who was born to lead, to make plans and give orders. Maybe only someone like him really had what it took to keep Chloe safe.

Now with Charles gone, if Chloe were here, she’d be the one seeing him off, no question. For now, Eugene would do it in her place.

Over on the island

When Chloe got the news, the mug in her hand dropped to the floor.

It didn’t break. Starting the day before, all the walkable areas inside the castle had been covered with thick, plush wool carpets.

It began when Chloe got out of bed and walked across the floor barefoot. She’d left the castle alone, made her way all the way down to the shore, and just stood there in the water.

Vincent got the alert and rushed over with security. By the time they reached her, Chloe was standing kneedeep in the sea, the hem of her dress soaked and clinging to her legs. She looked almost like a siren risen from the wavesstunning, hypnotic, impossible to look away from.

Seeing how tense Vincent looked, Chloe gave a faint, almost teasing smile.

Why so worried? Did you think I was trying to drown myself?

Vincent stayed quiet, his expression giving him away. Realizing he’d overreacted, he motioned with his hand. The guards and staff behind him all stepped back and left.

He moved forward and started to take off his long coat, meaning to drape it over Chloe’s shoulders, but she stepped out of the water first.

I’m hungry, she said flatly. Heading back in.

Chloe walked back barefoot again. Vincent noticed the skin on her toes was rubbed raw from the sand and small stones along the path. Right after, he gave the order: carpets down on every floor inside the castle, and a full sweep of the shoreevery bit of sand and gravel cleared away, any sharp rocks removed.

This was an island you wouldn’t find on any map, surrounded by nothing but ocean. Vincent’s order mobilized almost everyone theresecurity, staff, even the patrol guards pitched in, walking the shoreline and clearing it stone by stone.

Chloe didn’t pay much mind to how Vincent chose to run his people ragged. She just spent her days idling by the water. After Vincent had that tree cut downthe one where she used to watch a pair of birds faithfully tending their nestshe seemed to drift even further away.

Vincent let her go pretty much anywhere on the island, so she went out every day, walking around, looking at whatever caught her eye. Sometimes she’d just watch the little fish near the shore for hours.

To Vincent, it felt like Chloe was resisting him. She never said it out loud, just fought him with silence. Wasn’t it all just a pointless standoff?

But after a few days, it hit himmaybe Chloe wasn’t being stubborn. Maybe she just didn’t care anymore.
