In the end, Greg got the call and came over to pick her up.
"Ms. Lewis," he said softly, almost hesitantly.
Chloe looked at him and replied quietly, "It's been a while, Greg."
For a moment, Greg just stood there, not quite reacting. He stared at her for a few seconds before letting out a low breath. "You finally came back, Ms. Lewis."
There was a touch of emotion in his voice that made Chloe's heart ache a little. She offered a small smile. "Yes, I'm back. Sorry it took me longer than it should have."
Greg shook his head, a faint smile touching his lips. "What matters is you're here now. Charles would have been happy to see you back—wherever he is now."
"Greg," Chloe shifted the subject, "has everything been alright here at the house these past few days?"
Greg paused, thinking it over before answering. "Since Charles passed, the place has gotten quieter. A lot of the staff moved on—the gardeners, the caretakers, security... some went back to their hometowns. Now it's pretty much just me and one housekeeper left." He sighed quietly. "The house feels emptier every day. Mr. Myers hardly ever stops by. Sometimes I think maybe I should head back home too."
Chloe listened, letting his words settle before speaking again. "Greg, could you put together a file for me with information on everyone who left?"
Greg looked surprised.
"Ms. Lewis, why...?"
"I just need it," she said simply, not offering more. Greg had been close to Charles, almost like family, especially toward the end. Since Charles' passing, Greg had visibly aged. Right now, she didn't want to tell him that she suspected something wasn't right about Charles' death—not until she was sure.
"Alright," Greg said after a moment. "I'll put it together. Might take a little time. Why don't you come inside and sit down first?"
"Sure."
Chloe followed him into the main house. Everything looked just as she remembered from when she and Robert had stayed here. Greg mentioned that Charles had wanted the place kept exactly as it was—always ready, like a home waiting for their return.
While Greg went to gather the documents, Chloe wandered through the familiar rooms. With each memory that surfaced, her resolve to uncover the truth only grew stronger.
Outside, the sound of a car pulling up broke the quiet. Who could that be?
A few moments later, Arthur hurried in. When he saw Chloe standing there in the house, he froze.
