Facing the cameras and the gathered crowd, Oralia smiled and began to speak.
"I know after today's exhibition opens, everyone online is going to be saying, 'Wait, Oralia actually makes art?'"
The room filled with laughter, but then her smile softened into something more serious.
"You see me now, all put together," she said, glancing toward the lenses pointed at her. "But you don't know how messy my life used to be." She offered a small, resigned shrug. "My past wasn't glamorous. In fact... I grew up in the foster system. I was an orphan."
A ripple of surprise went through the audience. Plenty of fans had never heard this—to them, Oralia was the country's sweetheart: polished, talented, well-spoken. How could she have come from such a place?
What about her parents? She carried herself like someone who'd had every advantage. Yet here she was, calling herself an orphan.
Every camera in the room stayed fixed on her. This unexpected revelation had completely taken over what was supposed to be a low-key exhibition opening.
"Back in those group homes, I didn't really have friends. Nobody paid much attention to me. The only thing I owned was this dirty little stuffed bear—what people now call a 'lovey.' I actually found it tossed out in a dumpster behind a thrift store. When other kids picked on me, I'd tell them my parents gave it to me. But the truth was, I'd just dug it out of the trash."
Oralia chuckled softly as she shared the memory. Somehow, laughing about it now made those painful moments feel lighter.
"That group home... it was basically a front. The people running it used it as a cover to scam money and exploit kids. They treated us like commodities. Selling us was bad enough, but they also let the older kids bully the younger ones." She paused, her tone shifting. "I thought I'd be stuck in that kind of darkness forever. Until one day... I met someone. Someone who felt like an angel walking into my life. She saved me—and she saved all the kids in that home."
The press didn't blink, recording every word. This was going to be the story of the day, maybe the week.
Across the room, Chloe stood quietly holding her son Robert's hand, watching it all unfold.
Robert's eyes were glossy as he listened. "I never knew Oralia went through all that, Mom," he whispered. "The person she's talking about... the one who saved them... that was you, wasn't it?"
Chloe gave a gentle, almost invisible smile. "What matters isn't who it was. What matters is that Oralia found her way out. And look at her now—she's truly free."
Robert glanced up at his mother, then back at Oralia, who was still speaking earnestly to the reporters.
Oralia thanked that someone openly, saying she was like a guardian angel, heaven-sent.
