The man remained hesitant. Chloe watched his expression and added, "Once those explosives go off, there'll be no time to escape—you know that, right?"
Hearing this, his eyes narrowed. Something seemed to click in his mind. He jerked his head up, his gaze landing on Carolyn up on the elevated platform.
Carolyn met his look, her own expression stiffening.
"Heh, I haven't had my fill of life yet. If I'm gonna die, I'd rather go out enjoying myself first," the man muttered under his breath. Then, abruptly, he turned against her. Shooting Carolyn a sharp glare, he raised his voice. "You wanna die? Go ahead and die alone. I'm out."
With that, he spun around and sprinted toward the exit.
The other guy had been poised to chase after Oralia, but seeing his partner take off, he quickly scanned the room. Sensing the situation was turning south, he bolted too.
"Hey—wait for me!"
"Stop right there! Get back here!" Carolyn screamed after them. But the two men kept running, one after the other, ignoring her completely.
When it came to survival, the fastest runner lived another day.
Once the reality of the threat sank in, their loyalties vanished. Why throw their lives away here and waste all the good years still ahead of them? Death was for when your body gave out—not now, not like this.
"I said stop!" Carolyn was livid. Their betrayal only fueled her rage. None of them could be trusted. Not a single one. Men were all frauds, every last one of them—liars and deceivers.
A flash of pure hatred crossed Carolyn's eyes. She raised her pistol, shifting her aim away from Robert, and pointed it squarely at the lead runner.
"Bang." She didn't hesitate for a second.
The distance was considerable. The bullet tore through the air and struck the man in the thigh.
"Agh! Damn you!" he grunted, collapsing to the ground and rolling in pain. Blood soaked through his pant leg instantly.
Seeing his partner go down, the other man moved to help him up. But in the next instant, another shot rang out. This one didn't hit him—it whipped past his cheek, barely grazing the skin.
Enraged, he glared back toward the platform.
"You crazy bitch! You want to die, go die by yourself. Don't drag us into it. I'm done," he shouted at Carolyn. "For all we know, you're the one who gave us this damn sickness. Screw you—"
Then he turned and sprinted for the exit without a backward glance, leaving his wounded partner behind on the floor.
Watching him flee, Carolyn raised her pistol again, aiming at his retreating figure.
