Now, she was finally paying it all back.
He had given her a second chance at life, and she was doing everything she could to return the favor.
She never meant to drag Eugene into this mess. All she wanted was to keep him safe. But in the end, she'd been wrong—dead wrong.
She never should have been with him in the first place. If she hadn't, he would've been fine. He wouldn't be lying in a hospital bed right now. All of this happened because of her.
Because she crossed paths with a madman.
Feelings couldn't be forced. You either clicked with someone or you didn't.
With Vincent, it had always been admiration. When she was at her lowest, hanging by a thread, he showed up like a beam of light and pulled her through. That rescue left her with a deep respect for him, but she never once thought of crossing that line. Vincent had been tough on her from day one—tougher than on anyone else.
She never imagined that kind of strict discipline would twist into something so... messed up.
Love?
Did Vincent even know what love was? That twisted, suffocating grip he had on her wasn't love—it was torture.
Rhea stayed seated in the chair and picked up the canvas sneakers Bruce had bought for her. She slipped them on quietly. "Thanks," she said softly.
Her eyes drifted toward Hogan. She couldn't make out what he and Chloe were talking about, but judging from Hogan's expression, it wasn't anything light.
Rhea started to push herself up, wanting to walk over, but just then the light above the operating room doors went out. Almost everyone in the waiting area stood up at once.
Chloe and Hogan noticed too. They cut their conversation short and moved toward the doors, one after the other.
The OR doors swung open. Blaine stepped out, his scrubs stained with blood. Melinda, who was closest, flinched at the sight.
"Grandpa..."
Blaine scanned the room, his gaze searching, as if he hadn't found who he was looking for.
"How is he?"
Chloe stepped forward, her voice steady but quiet.
Blaine looked at her and slowly pulled down his surgical mask. A few spots of blood dotted the blue material—a clear sign of how intense the surgery had been.
"We got the bullet out. It's... kind of a medical miracle, honestly. His heart sits slightly to the right—just enough that the bullet didn't hit it directly. That tiny difference kept him alive long enough for us to operate." Blaine let out a tired sigh. "The bullet's out, but he's in a deep coma. The next few days are critical. Whether he pulls through... it's still up in the air. And the risk of infection is high."
Blaine laid it all out plainly. They'd pulled Eugene back from the brink, but whether he made it out of the woods depended entirely on how his body responded now.
