Why are you at my place so carly?

I asked.

Calvin pointed to the door across from mine and replied, I’ve moved in.

Only then did I remember that earlier, I did seem to hear some sounds of moving from the apartment across the hall.

I had even thought to myself that it looked like I was about to have a new neighbor.

But I never would have imagined that this neighbor would actually be Calvin?!

This answer was far more shocking than him coming to see me so early in the morning.

I stared at him in astonishment for quite a while before I found my voice again: Why did you move across from me?

Seeing my defensive expression, Calvin suddenly smiled: Are you really that afraid of me?

Only then did I realize that maybe my reaction was indeed a bit exaggerated.

I quickly composed myself and tried to cover it up: Why would I be afraid of you? I just don’t understand why you moved here.

According to what he said yesterday, he would be working at the police station in New York from now on, but the station isn’t close to here.

Calvin replied calmly, It’s quieter here.

That reason was actually fairly convincing to me, since I knew he preferred quieter places to live.

I didn’t dwell on it any longer. I lifted the trash bag in my hand slightly and said, Well, you go ahead and unpack. I’m going to take out the trash.

With that, I headed toward the elevator.

To my surprise, Calvin actually followed me into the elevator.

I glanced at him in surprise: Why are you following me again?

Calvin looked as if it was only natural: Whenever I move to a new place, I always make a habit of checking out the surroundings and eliminating any safety hazards. That way, I can feel more at ease living there.

I had never noticed before that he actually had this kind of occupational habit.

Although I found it a bit odd, I didn’t ask any more questions.

I just let him follow behind me as I made a round trip to the trash bins.

After throwing away the trash, I planned to head home.

But Calvin called out to me: You probably just moved in recently too, right? Come take a walk with me.

After saying that, he turned around and walked off in another direction.

Clearly, that wasn’t a request.

Looking at Calvin’s back as he walked away, I could only follow him helplessly.

He slowed his pace and didn’t walk too fast.

I caught up to him easily and walked by his side.

I’ve never really understood Calvin.

Even though he stopped me, as we walked around the neighborhood, we barely exchanged a few words.

It was as if he simply wanted to spend some time with me.

Just before I entered my apartment, Calvin asked me, What are you planning to do tomorrow?

I replied, I’ve already found a job. I’m starting work tomorrow.

He paused for a moment and asked, Where? I’ll give you a ride.

I raised my hand, pointed out the window, and shook my head to refuse: No need, it’s just across the street from the complex.

Calvin didn’t insist. He nodded slightly and turned to go back to his own place.

I didn’t understand why he was suddenly being so friendly one after another, and went home feeling puzzled.

Chapter 33

But maybe it was just my imagination

Early the next morning, I was woken up by a loud knocking at the door.

Whoever it was knocked so hard that it sounded like they were up to no good.

Halfasleep, I walked to the entryway. Instead of opening the door right away, I first checked the camera on the door lock.

When I saw the person’s face, I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. At least it wasn’t some vicious criminal.

But my heart still couldn’t help but jolt awake, because the person standing outside, looking furious, was Georgia.

Sometimes, she could be even scarier than a criminal.

I took a deep breath, then grabbed the doorknob and opened the door.

Sure enough, as soon as she saw me, Georgia started firing off questions like a machine gun: Whitney! You’d better explain yourself! Did you see Cal?

Her barrage of questions made my ears ring, and before I could answer, I heard Calvin’s angry voice: Georgia? What do you think you’re doing?!
