Over the years, Nelson had genuinely believed he was the one who had been betrayed.
He had truly hated Juniper. What gave her the right to treat him as a mere understudy? What gave her the right to walk away so effortlessly? The hatred used to make his chest ache.
But now, knowing the truth about the vicious bullying she endured, he felt as if an invisible blindfold had just been ripped from his eyes.
What consumed him most now was uncovering the truth behind Blackwood Institute.
If she was put through that hell because of him...
Nelson couldn't bear to imagine the consequences. He even found himself selfishly praying that it had been Beatrice's doing, since Beatrice had always treated Juniper horribly.
But the next day, Quinn called with an update. They had tracked down the former staff member from Blackwood Institute and were currently bringing him in.
Nelson drained a glass of ice water and waited in silence.
Meanwhile, Yvonne was panicking. She had intended to silence the other two former asylum employees permanently. She managed to eliminate one, but the other had escaped—only to fall right into the hands of Quinn's operatives.
Hardening her resolve, Yvonne ordered her hitmen to take out the target on the spot, completely underestimating Quinn's tight security measures.
The assassination attempt failed miserably, raising Quinn's suspicions enough to immediately report the ambush to Nelson.
Following the trail, Nelson's investigation inevitably led straight back to the Saint family's own private guards.
Nelson closed his eyes, taking in the sight of the bound bodyguards kneeling before him.
As the family heir, Nelson was well aware of the shadow operatives the Saint family kept on their payroll.
He remained silent, waiting for Quinn to arrive with the asylum staffer.
Soon enough, the man was hauled in. He was in his fifties, entirely rattled by the recent attempt on his life, and shivering as he confessed. "Business at the institute was terrible back then. We were on the verge of going under. Then Juniper was brought in. I was confused as to why one patient needed a team of professionals guarding her around the clock. I didn't dare ask who she was. But people kept showing up to visit her, and one time, things got out of hand."
He gulped nervously, terrified of the powerful men standing before him.
He slumped to the floor, his entire body trembling. "If I tell you everything, will you let me live? I was just an employee there! I swear, I never did anything to hurt anyone!"
