He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 100

Scarlett's tears flowed endlessly, her sobs completely shattering her composure.

"Yes, she's stable now. The doctor said they just need to monitor her for a few more days, and if everything remains clear, she can be discharged and fly home."

"If Talia hadn't been suddenly attacked, we were planning on staying there a few extra days to look after her," Amelia explained honestly.

Overcome with emotion, Scarlett's legs gave out, and she nearly collapsed in a desperate display of gratitude.

"Mr. Gray, Mrs. Gray, thank you so much. I... I don't even know what to say."

Amelia and Timothy quickly caught her arms, preventing her from falling completely.

"None of that now, don't you dare! We're friends with your mother, and you and Talia are like sisters. There's no need for such formalities at a time like this."

"If the roles were reversed, your mother would have undoubtedly stayed for us. Don't mention it, Scarlett. This was the least we could do."

Tears streamed silently down Scarlett's cheeks.

She immediately pulled out her phone, desperate to contact her mother, but the moment she unlocked the screen, she hesitated.

Sensing her apprehension, Amelia pulled out her own phone and initiated a video call with Jacqueline.

Unaware that Scarlett was in the room, Jacqueline answered the call.

Through the screen, Scarlett saw her mother's familiar, beautiful, yet startlingly pale face.

She was wearing a hospital gown, and her signature long, wavy hair had been chopped off. Her large eyes looked exhausted and dim, and her lips held no color. Yet, despite it all, she still possessed a striking beauty, albeit weathered by her battle.

"What's wrong, Amelia? Have you landed in Bay City? Is Talia alright?"

"Talia's doing perfectly fine, just a few scratches, nothing serious. Jacqueline, how are you feeling? Are you able to keep anything down today?"

Hearing that made Scarlett's heart drop heavily into her stomach.

Her mother couldn't even eat?

No wonder she looked so frail, her jawline dangerously sharp. Scarlett felt as though an invisible hand was violently wringing her heart.

She paused, her piercing gaze locking onto the screen, as if trying to look past the tears and straight into her daughter's soul.

"I know everything you've suffered. And those who dared to touch you will pay the price the moment I return. But right now, listen to me closely. You stand tall. Do not let anyone look down on you. You're a mother now. Fight for your dignity, build a nest egg for your daughter, and don't let those bastards win!"

Her tone was as cold, sharp, and commanding as ever, even while confined to a hospital bed.

Hearing the rhythmic beeping of the medical monitors through the speaker, Scarlett felt a knife twist in her gut. Her guilt multiplied, but she swallowed her tears and gave a firm, determined nod.

"Don't worry, Mom. I won't let my emotions dictate my choices ever again."

"Focus entirely on your recovery. The moment you're cleared to fly back, I'll be right there waiting at the airport to bring you home."

Staring intently at the screen, Scarlett finally caught a fleeting, incredibly rare glimmer of raw tenderness in her mother's exhausted eyes.

Jacqueline parted her lips to respond, but suddenly, a shrill, malicious voice echoed loudly from the hospital room doorway.

"Jacqueline is sick? Hah... What wonderful news! The heavens truly have eyes! It's pure karma!"
