The more Scarlett thought about it, the more her heart broke. When her eyes locked onto the two shortened stumps of his thighs, an overwhelming, suffocating wave of pain crashed over her.
She slapped a hand over her mouth, fighting with everything she had to stifle her sobs.
Right at that moment, Zachary glanced up.
Startled, Scarlett yanked the curtains shut with lightning speed, her entire body shaking.
Zachary narrowed his eyes at her window. He had clearly seen the fabric move, though he hadn't caught a glimpse of who was behind it.
Instantly, alarm bells blared in his head.
He frantically looked around the room, then back at the glass. Was it see-through from the outside?
Had someone just watched him dismantle his legs?
Panic seized him for two suffocating seconds.
Then, a knock echoed from his door.
Zachary froze. Instinct kicked in, and he immediately tried to stand up to close the curtains he had forgotten to pull.
But in his blind panic, he completely forgot he had just detached his legs.
He collapsed instantly, his body slamming onto the hard floor with a sickening thud.
As he scrambled awkwardly to push himself up, his eyes turned to absolute ice. For a split second, he wanted to scream at the universe, to demand why it was so viciously cruel. Why keep him alive, only to take his legs?
But the despair only lasted a moment. He quickly reined it in. Planting his hands firmly on the ground, he dragged his torso across the floor with desperate speed, yanking every single curtain tightly shut.
The knocking continued.
