“Hello. The baby's fever has gone down a bit for now, currently around 100 degrees. Given how young she is, the doctor recommends keeping her hospitalized for observation. If you agree, please come with me to handle the admission paperwork.”
At the word “hospitalized,” Scarlett's legs instinctively began to tremble. “Is... is it serious? How is she right now? Is she okay?”
Sensing her anxiety, the nurse offered a reassuring smile. “It's not too severe. We've been seeing a lot of recurring fevers in infants lately due to a circulating virus. Keeping her here just makes it easier for us to monitor and care for her. She's doing alright at the moment, so try not to worry.”
Scarlett wiped the cold sweat from her brow and immediately agreed to the admission.
As she followed the nurse to the reception desk, however, something didn't sit right with her.
Because Dawn was so young, they hadn't taken her out anywhere since their last trip to the mall. At most, Zara would take her for a walk downstairs when the weather was nice.
Scarlett was incredibly strict about hygiene. Every time they came back from outside, they sanitized thoroughly before even picking the baby up.
Logically, it should have been impossible for her to catch a virus.
She pushed the nagging doubt to the back of her mind and quickly filled out the paperwork.
Afterward, she and Zara took the baby up to the inpatient ward.
Prioritizing Dawn's comfort and health, Scarlett opted for a private VIP suite.
Dawn had been lethargic earlier, but as her fever broke, her energy returned. She drank her milk and even babbled happily at them.
Scarlett had just started to relax when the nurse returned to check her temperature. It was rising again. Scarlett's heart plummeted.
Scarlett barely blinked that night.
Dawn's fever broke, only to spike again in the early hours of the morning. It never fully went away, hovering persistently around a low-grade 99.5 degrees.
Scarlett had never been so terrified in her life.
