“Tell me exactly what happened the day you met.”
Seeing that Scarlett wasn't going to fire her on the spot, Zara calmed down slightly, her hands clutching the hem of her shirt.
“They originally wanted to come to the house, but I told them you'd forbidden me from giving out the address. They didn't push it. So, we met at a nearby mall.”
“Mr. Flynn was so thrilled to see her. He immediately scooped Dawn into his arms and kissed her several times. He didn't hand her back until she needed a diaper change and started crying.”
“It didn't last long. We just had a quick meal, and then I brought Dawn straight home.”
Zara spilled the entire story in one breath.
Scarlett's heart raced as she listened.
Yardley had been in and out of the hospital constantly lately.
Now that she thought about it, she recalled him having a dry cough the last time they spoke. If he had kissed Dawn repeatedly while showing symptoms, it was almost guaranteed he was the one who passed the virus to their daughter.
Scarlett mulled it over, suddenly realizing a glaring hole in Zara's story. For safety reasons, she had assigned a security detail to the nanny.
If Zara had taken Dawn to meet Yardley, why hadn't Stellan mentioned it?
Scarlett narrowed her eyes.
“Security is supposed to be with you every time you leave the house. Why didn't they report this to me?”
Zara avoided her gaze. “I... I lied to the guards. I told them I was just taking Dawn for a stroll downstairs. I was gone for less than an hour, so they didn't suspect anything.”
“Alright. I understand the situation.”
Scarlett fell silent for a long moment before fixing Zara with a steady stare.
In those first few days after giving birth when Scarlett was too weak to even get out of bed, Zara had taken care of her most intimate hygienic needs without complaint.
Scarlett was deeply appreciative of her. Aside from this recent lapse in judgment, she trusted Zara completely.
In this day and age, finding a reliable nanny was incredibly difficult. Plus, once Scarlett decided she trusted someone, she was fiercely loyal to them.
Feeling emotionally drained and heavy-hearted, Scarlett walked over to the window, trying to pull herself together.
Just then, the rhythmic rolling of a suitcase echoed near the hospital room door.
Moments later, a tall, middle-aged woman appeared in the doorway. She wore a baseball cap, a chic mid-length white trench coat paired with dark blue flared jeans, and crisp white sneakers. Despite being over fifty, she exuded effortless elegance and vitality. Her eyes were sharp and clear, her makeup flawless, and she carried herself with the triumphant swagger of someone who had just closed a multimillion-dollar deal overseas. Her aura was undeniably fierce.
At the sound of the footsteps and the familiar scent of expensive perfume wafting in, a wave of intense joy washed over Scarlett.
She spun around, her eyes widening at the beloved face before her. Overwhelmed with emotion, she sprinted across the room and threw herself into the woman's arms.
