“Mom!”
It was the most satisfying word Scarlett had spoken in months.
“I'm here!”
Jacqueline's voice was bright and a little raspy as it rang through the room. The two women clung to each other tightly, as if they had never argued in their lives.
Even through their layers of clothing, Scarlett could feel a distinct difference in her mother's chest, as if a piece was missing.
The realization broke her. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
“Mom, you...”
She looked at Jacqueline with profound heartbreak, a thousand words caught in her throat, rendering her unable to form a complete sentence.
Jacqueline, however, was in high spirits. She laughed heartily and did a crisp twirl in front of her daughter.
“What are you crying for? Your mother is perfectly fine. I just had to slay a dragon, and now the queen has returned.”
“Don't worry, the surgery went beautifully. Better than expected, actually. I even got discharged early just so I could rush over and see my granddaughter.”
“Dawn! My sweet Dawn, Grandma's here! Come here, let Grandma hold you!”
Jacqueline gently pushed Scarlett aside, practically sprinting toward the bassinet.
Her eyes crinkled with absolute delight at the sight of the tiny infant. She reached out to scoop her up.
Zara panicked. The nanny lunged forward, brandishing a bottle of sanitizer like a weapon.
“Ma'am, you have to sanitize before you touch her!”
Zara's high-alert stance startled Jacqueline, but it made Scarlett burst into a tearful chuckle.
Well, her earlier lecture had clearly left an impression. Experience was definitely the best teacher.
“Mom, Dawn's immune system is incredibly weak right now. We have to be extra careful.”
Jacqueline smiled and nodded.
“You're right, better safe than sorry. I've been on several flights in these clothes. I'll go change and scrub down properly before I hold my grandbaby.”
True to her word, Jacqueline spun around and marched into the bathroom like a woman on a mission.
With that kind of boundless energy, she certainly didn't look like someone recovering from a major illness.
However, the joyful atmosphere didn't last long before it was shattered by a commotion out in the hallway.
“It wasn't me! The nanny is framing me! I swear I didn't feed the baby sleeping pills! It wasn't me!”
“Julian! You have to believe me! I'm innocent!”
“That heartless nanny must have done it to shift the blame onto me!”
Sylvia's hysterical, ear-piercing shrieks bled through the door.
Hearing that grating voice, Scarlett felt a mix of disgust and surprise.
So Julian's son had been admitted to the hospital last night too?
It made sense. This hospital was the most prestigious in Bay City, boasting state-of-the-art facilities, top-tier medical experts, and an exclusive VIP wing that offered unmatched personalized care.
Practically every wealthy elite in the city chose this place for their treatments and surgeries.
Rumor had it that the Croft family were the majority shareholders, so Julian bringing his son here was a given.
Scarlett had chosen it for its unparalleled medical standards; when it came to health, she never spared any expense.
