“Julian just left? Yardley, are you sure?” Sylvia stared in utter disbelief.
Gwen's expression darkened with confusion. “But Julian left ages ago. He had a flight to catch. How could he have just been out there?”
Catching the inconsistency, Yardley shot up from his chair.
“I ran into him five minutes ago by the elevators. Which means... what he said was true?”
Yardley's already stern gaze turned utterly ruthless.
He shoved one hand into his pocket, an intimidating chill rolling off his body. His sharp, dark eyes bore down on them with terrifying intensity.
Panic set in, but Sylvia fought to mask it, quickly adopting a look of pure innocence.
“Yardley, what are you talking about? What did Julian say to you?”
Gwen was equally frantic. “Yes, what did he tell you?”
Yardley glared at them, intense suspicion taking root.
He knew Julian's personality inside and out. The man never spoke without facts; he wasn't the type to jump to conclusions based on hearsay.
Combined with the sheer panic etched onto Sylvia and Gwen's faces, Yardley began to put the pieces together. He felt a sickening jolt, his chest constricting as if he had swallowed a thousand needles.
“Sylvia. Tell me the truth,” Yardley demanded. “What really happened with Caleb's sleeping pills?”
“That kind of dosage, over such a long period of time... You expect me to believe the nanny acted entirely on her own? You're with Caleb every single day. How could you not notice something was wrong?”
Yardley felt as if he were suffocating.
“I want to be a good mother! I want to spend time with my baby! But... but has your wife given me a moment's peace? Has she let me breathe for even one second?”
Her sobs escalated until she collapsed onto the floor, pointing to her horribly swollen face with endless grievance.
“Look at me! My face was finally starting to heal, and then... then Scarlett's mother slapped me dozens of times today!”
“This bruise on my forehead is from her kicking me in the head! Scarlett's mother literally kicked me!”
“What did I do to deserve being abused by them?! I'm just here at the hospital with my sick baby, and they still won't leave me alone!”
“Yardley, I know Julian doesn't love or trust me. But I never imagined that you... you'd turn on me, too...”
Sylvia gasped for air, crying so violently that she choked, her face turning an alarming shade of purple.
