He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 131

She wanted nothing more than to throw boiling water in his face.

But looking down at her daughter, who had finally settled in her arms, she grabbed a cup and forced herself to put it back down.

She glared at him, her eyes filled with icy hatred.

Yardley knew he was in the wrong. He stood frozen at the doorway, not daring to step forward, all of his previous fury completely evaporating.

He stared nervously at the infant in Scarlett's arms. Looking at her tiny face, guilt immediately washed over him.

Under Scarlett's desperate soothing, Dawn finally fell back asleep.

Scarlett carefully placed Dawn on the bed, giving Zara a pointed look to watch over her.

Then, she shot Yardley a murderous glare, signaling him to follow her out into the hallway.

She had been meaning to settle the score with him regarding their daughter's sudden viral infection anyway.

She hadn't expected him to barge in like a lunatic first.

She didn't even have to guess. The way he had furiously kicked the door open meant he had undoubtedly been fed more exaggerated lies by that mother-daughter duo.

Clearly, he had bought every word of it. Scarlett's lips curled into a sarcastic smirk at the thought.

The two of them walked one after the other into the nearby stairwell.

Frustrated and anxious, Yardley instinctively pulled out a cigarette, took a deep drag, and mumbled an apology.

"I'm sorry, I didn't realize Dawn was in there."

Scarlett found his voice grating.

"Shut up, I don't want to hear it. Get straight to the point. What are you picking a fight over this time?"

Yardley looked at Scarlett, feeling a suffocating panic, but forced himself to speak.

"I heard your mother hit Sylvia, right out in the hospital corridor. Is that true?"

Scarlett crossed her arms, her gaze turning frosty as she shot him a cold glare.

"And? Are you here to play knight in shining armor for Sylvia again?"

Yardley frowned.

"Can't you all just talk things out reasonably? Why resort to slapping each other? We are civilized adults, there is no need to make things so ugly."

Scarlett found his words utterly repulsive and cut him off sharply.

"I'm sorry, but I prefer doing things the savage way now. The rougher and dirtier it gets, the better I feel."

Yardley froze completely, his mind going blank. He felt an instinctual surge of defensiveness.

"What does this have to do with me?"

"Ever since she turned one month old, you haven't let me see her or touch her, as if she is your personal property and has nothing to do with me!"

"And now she caught a cold, and you are blaming it on me?"

His next words were even harsher. "Since when did you become so unreasonable?"

Scarlett felt the fury swelling in her chest rise all the way to her throat, choking her until she thought she might explode.

"I am unreasonable?"

"Yardley, didn't you go behind my back a few days ago, having Leah trick Zara into leaving so you could hold Dawn?"

"You even kissed her face multiple times. Did that happen or not?"

"She has been running a high fever on and off for the past two days. Her temperature just finally broke. The doctor said it's a viral infection. I am asking you, how does a baby who rarely ever goes outside get a viral infection?"

Scarlett pointed a trembling finger right at Yardley's face.

"Your voice is hoarse, your chest sounds congested, and you obviously had a cold recently. Why else would you be wearing a mask?"
