He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 149

A burst of unhinged laughter erupted from the speaker. "La Belle Nuit burned down, didn't it?"

"That was your mother's only business. Let's see what you two have left to act so arrogant about now."

"Such a pity nobody died. That would have been so much more fun."

"I heard your mom broke down crying at the scene. Just thinking about it makes me laugh. So satisfying. It is just too satisfying."

The caller was using a voice changer again, distorting the words into a deeply sinister, masculine tone.

The voice was entirely unhinged and severely warped, grating painfully against Scarlett's eardrums.

Scarlett figured it out instantly. This was another one of Sylvia's pathetic tricks.

She really was incredibly stupid. She always chose to pull these disgusting stunts right when Scarlett was on the absolute brink of losing her temper.

Well, this was perfect. Scarlett didn't have to hold back anymore.

Scarlett's chillingly dark voice cut through the phone line.

"Sylvia, stop playing games with the voice changer. I know it's you, and I know you hired someone to set the fire at La Belle Nuit."

"You think this is satisfying?"

"Just you wait. I am about to show you something even more satisfying."

With a furious glare, Scarlett ended the call.

On the other end of the line, Sylvia, who had been glowing with arrogant triumph just seconds before, was struck dumb. Her phone slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the floor.

Scarlett's icy threat had felt like a freezing wind blowing straight out of hell, causing Sylvia to shudder uncontrollably.

A wave of instinctual cowardice washed over her. She looked up at Gwen.

"Mom, did you hear what she just said? Why do I feel like she sounded way too confident?"

Gwen paused in surprise, thought for a moment, and then firmly shook her head.

"Impossible. I already checked the situation. The police have officially ruled it an accidental fire. They couldn't possibly have found any evidence. She's just trying to scare you. Don't worry about it."

Sylvia believed that all of Scarlett and Jacqueline's previous arrogance came entirely from the success of La Belle Nuit.

Now that the club was burnt to a crisp and out of commission for the foreseeable future, Jacqueline was facing massive financial losses, and the police had declared it an accident.

In Sylvia's mind, Scarlett and Jacqueline were nothing more than lambs to the slaughter.

With that comforting thought, her lingering doubts vanished completely. She went back to singing wildly with Gwen, even calling in two handsome young men to join them and sing romantic duets.

Scarlett arrived outside the VIP room with her men.

Her eyes were cold as she peered through the slight crack in the door. She watched Sylvia and Gwen acting completely wild, hanging off the handsome young men as they sang. The scene was utterly revolting.

Before discovering Sylvia's true colors, Scarlett had genuinely believed the rumors. In high society, Sylvia was famous for her flawless reputation. Scarlett had heard endless praise about how pure, kind, and gentle she was. Yardley had complimented her innocence more than once.

As for Gwen, her public image was even more immaculate. She was the second daughter of the Quinn family. The two sisters had married into the Flynn and Stetson families, making them the ultimate examples of aristocratic wives with perfect pedigrees.
