Scarlett's nails dug painfully into her palms, her anxiety and rage peaking.
Outside the window, Julian was still violently hammering on the car, the door rattling under his fists. But Yardley ignored him completely, his eyes clouded with a psychotic obsession.
Scarlett realized then that the man in front of her was no longer the Yardley she knew. Pushed to the edge, there was truly nothing he wouldn't do.
She stared him dead in the eye, forcing every word out through gritted teeth. "Do you really have the video?"
The red glint in his eyes flickered. He pulled out his phone and pulled up a photo.
One glance was all it took. Her heart seized in agony. Pure, unadulterated hatred flooded her veins as a tremor racked her body.
"Fine. I'll go back to Orchard Villa with you. But... you have to promise me that none of this will ever see the light of day."
A cruel smile played on Yardley's lips. "Of course. As long as you play the good wife, I promise I'll destroy it all. I'd never want my mother-in-law to suffer such shame."
Scarlett practically choked on the irony. "Don't you dare call her that!"
"I have never seen a son-in-law stoop to such disgusting depths in my life!"
His tone shifted to a gentle register that was entirely terrifying. "I didn't want it to come to this. I never wanted to hurt you or your mother. But you gave me no choice, did you?"
"I just... want you and our daughter back by my side. I had to take extreme measures."
He sounded almost detached, his face twisting into a bitter expression. "Even death row inmates get the chance to appeal and reform... Scarlett, you can't just slap a death sentence on me without giving me a single chance to fix this. It's too cruel."
Scarlett closed her eyes, feeling as though an invisible hand was crushing her heart. It was suffocating.
She had never imagined that five years of toxic love, resulting in a beautiful child, would end in such an absurd nightmare—one where she couldn't even break free when she tried.
When she was by his side, he had never cared. Now that she was leaving, he was tearing the world apart to keep her.
Was this love, or just a sick, twisted possession? She couldn't tell anymore. It was just a massive, tragic joke.
Julian frantically grabbed Scarlett's arm. "Scarlett! Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
Scarlett shook her head, forcing a weak, reassuring smile. "I'm fine, Julian. Yardley and I just have some things to discuss. I'm going to ride back with him. You should go get some rest."
Looking at her disheveled clothes and messy hair, Julian's eyes widened in disbelief. "Scarlett, are you sure...?"
She nodded. "Yeah. Go home. Goodnight."
Julian stood frozen.
Right in front of him, Yardley casually slid his arm around Scarlett's waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He looked at Julian with utter arrogance. "Did you hear that, Julian? This is a family matter. We don't need outsiders sticking their noses in. Get lost."
Yardley slammed the door and rolled up the window, cutting Julian off once again.
Watching the taillights fade into the distance, Julian felt a deep, gnawing sense of unease. He couldn't fathom why Scarlett would suddenly cave to Yardley.
