"Dad, I'll do it," Sylvia volunteered instantly. "You don't need to waste your time on something so trivial."
Motioning for a few of her bodyguards to follow, she marched next door, hands on her hips, practically vibrating with arrogance.
At that moment, Scarlett and Talia were crouched by the reception table arranging gift bags, their backs to the entrance, completely unaware of her arrival.
Staring at their backs, Sylvia felt a surge of unwarranted fury. "Excuse me!" she barked, her tone dripping with entitlement. "Could you play something a little less embarrassing? And turn it down! It's ruining my event next door!"
That shrill voice was entirely too familiar.
Scarlett and Talia stood up and turned around. Seeing Sylvia's haughty face, they both froze for a second before their expressions iced over.
Talia was the first to fire back. "Well, if it isn't Sylvia Stetson."
"We rented this hall, and we'll play whatever music we want. How is that any of your business?"
Sylvia blinked, taken aback that they were the ones hosting. She glanced at the elegant welcome sign that read "Baby's Welcoming Gala" and a look of dawning comprehension—quickly followed by sheer contempt—flashed across her face.
"Oh, so it's a party for your kid. No wonder you're playing such trashy music."
She tilted her chin up, her voluminous pink dress making her look like a puffed-up flamingo. "Today is the biggest day of my life. I am officially being welcomed back into my family by my father, the CEO of Schmidt Properties! Your racket is dragging down the class of my gala, which means I have every right to tell you to shut it off!"
Talia looked ready to launch herself at Sylvia, but Scarlett caught her arm.
Tugging Talia back slightly, Scarlett kept her voice completely steady. "Sylvia, you have your gala, and I have mine. We're minding our own business, so don't come over here trying to boss us around."
Sylvia's eyes swept over their relatively simple setup, her sneer deepening.
