The harsh, fluorescent hospital lighting cast sickly shadows over Yardley's deathly pale face, making the venomous scowl he wore look even more psychotic.
Julian took a slow breath, forcing down his own disgust, and met the man's glare. "Are you done staring?"
Yardley didn't say a word. He closed the distance between them until they were practically chest-to-chest, the tension suffocating.
"What did you do to her?"
His voice was a shredded rasp. He had clearly just regained consciousness and was still running on fumes.
Julian let out a dark, mocking laugh. "You should be asking your precious Sylvia that question. Scarlett gets abducted and pumped full of narcotics, and you really don't know who ordered the hit?"
"I asked what you did to her!"
Yardley's voice exploded into a roar. The veins in his temples bulged as he violently grabbed the lapels of Julian's jacket.
"What exactly happened in that car?! How far did you take it?! Tell me!"
The memory of the fogged windows flashed through his mind, and his eyes glazed over with a psychotic red haze. The image was branded into his retinas, playing on an endless, torturous loop.
Julian stared at the unhinged man, feeling nothing but pity and exhaustion.
He ruthlessly swatted Yardley's hands away, his tone dripping with condescension. "She was drugged out of her mind. I was trying to get her to an ER, but you were throwing a tantrum on the hood of my car, blocking our exit."
"For the record, I didn't lay a single inappropriate finger on her. I simply—"
"I saw her straddling you!" Yardley interrupted, spitting the words with venom. "I saw you kissing!"
"If nothing happened, why didn't you roll down the window?! Why didn't you open the door?! You... you took advantage of her when she couldn't fight back!"
Julian's expression darkened into absolute disgust. He looked at Yardley like he was a pathetic bug.
"She was out of her mind on a synthetic chemical! She grabbed me because I was the closest breathing thing in the room! Is that really so hard for your ego to comprehend?"
"Stop projecting your own filthy delusions onto me. I am not answering your paranoid interrogations."
