Julian's call was to his personal connections to find top medical experts for Dawn.
Scarlett looks at him gratefully. "Thank you, Julian."
He smiles warmly. "What are you thanking me for? It's the least I can do. As long as Dawn gets better, nothing else matters."
He turns to Yardley, his expression reverting to its usual icy detachment. "We'll decide on the next steps once the specialist from Country A arrives. Yardley, you should head back and rest. Don't upset Scarlett any further; she's already on edge."
Julian's tone was merely suggestive, but to Yardley, it grated on his nerves.
He let out a harsh scoff, his eyes full of mockery. "Cut the saint act, Julian."
"Until Scarlett and I officially finalize our divorce, you have zero right to dictate anything regarding my wife and my daughter."
"You accused me of overstepping my boundaries before, but from where I'm standing, you're the one crossing the line!"
Yardley's taunts threatened to unravel Scarlett's hard-won composure.
Just then, Stellan walked into the hospital room.
Scarlett caught his eye and gave a swift nod.
Stellan understood immediately. He strode over to Yardley, firmly but politely gesturing toward the door. "Mr. Flynn, this way, please. You are not welcome here."
Yardley was speechless.
He looked at Scarlett's exhausted yet resolute face, a flicker of pity crossing his heart.
He felt helpless and incredibly frustrated, but he swallowed his anger.
Forget it. Their child was sick; she had to be in agony.
He shouldn't provoke her at a time like this.
Yardley took one last, deep look at his daughter on the bed, then turned on his heel and left.
Outside the hospital, the night breeze was cool.
Julian flying in a top-tier medical expert from Country A on such short notice was a move Yardley hadn't anticipated.
He had never seen Julian invest so much effort into any woman's affairs.
"Mr. Flynn, I have some bad news."
The lawyer's grave voice came through the speaker, making Yardley's stomach drop. "The police just issued an update. They've essentially confirmed that your mother, Corinne, and her sister, Gwen, embezzled the charity gala's donations. They are facing serious charges of corporate fraud and misappropriation of funds. At this rate, it is highly likely they will be remanded in custody and face severe jail time..."
"Please think of any alternative avenues to mitigate their charges."
Even though he knew his mother and aunt were going to take a massive fall this time.
Hearing the words "remanded in custody" out loud struck him like a thunderbolt.
His grip on the steering wheel tightened until his knuckles turned white. After a long, suffocating silence, he closed his eyes and replied in a dark, raspy voice. "Alright. I understand."
-
Exhausted to his bones, Yardley drove back to Orchard Villa.
He hadn't eaten all day. His stomach was hollow and aching. As he pushed the front door open, he was about to ask Leah to fix him a quick bowl of pasta.
Instead, he saw a woman with short hair, wearing an apron, carrying a plate of food from the kitchen to the dining table.
