Scarlett didn't push it any further. She and Julian walked confidently back to the table and took their seats.
"Out of respect for you, Mr. Thorne, three will do," she said, meeting Veronica's hateful glare with total calm. "I suggest you learn from this, Ms. Thorne. Stop throwing your weight around like you own the world. Sutton City doesn't belong entirely to your family."
"You—!" Veronica gasped, nearly choking on her fury. She pointed a trembling finger at Scarlett, ready to unleash hell.
But a single, lethal glare from Quentin shut her down. Seething and humiliated, she was forced to swallow her rage and take a seat next to him.
Quentin, to his credit, proved to be an excellent host.
The spread consisted of Sutton City's finest, astronomically expensive delicacies, paired with top-tier vintage liquor from his private cellar.
Ignoring the tension, Scarlett immediately dug in. She hadn't eaten properly in days, and she was absolutely starving. The local cuisine hit the spot, and she ate with unabashed enthusiasm.
Julian watched her with blatant affection. Seeing her enjoy herself brought a genuine smile to his face. When her glass was low, he refilled it. When a dish was out of her reach, he casually spun the lazy Susan to bring it closer.
Without her having to ask, he meticulously shelled shrimp and cracked crab legs, placing the pristine meat into a small, clean bowl and sliding it in front of her. His level of attentive service rivaled that of an eager assistant trying to impress a boss.
The display left Quentin and Veronica entirely dumbfounded.
Quentin's calculating gaze darted back and forth between the two of them, his mind working in overdrive.
Veronica, sporting three bright red handprints on her face, sat rigidly at the table, turning green with envy as she watched a man of Julian's caliber dote on Scarlett hand and foot.
Several times, she almost exploded, but Quentin's heavy hand clamped down on her knee under the table, holding her in place.
