“Scarlett, I… I just slipped. It was an accident.”
“Please forgive me? I’m begging you… I… I can’t go back to that place…”
Corinne Quinn was on her knees, groveling in absolute terror.
Hearing the bystanders whisper the word *murder* had completely short-circuited her brain. She didn’t even know what had possessed her to do something so deranged. Now, a suffocating regret threatened to swallow her whole.
Scarlett Langley stood rooted to the spot, staring coldly down at the woman cowering at her feet. Her heart was still pounding against her ribs.
If Julian Croft hadn't thrown himself into traffic without a second thought to yank Dawn’s stroller back, the outcome would have been unthinkable.
And this woman groveling before her? She possessed a heart so venomous that she’d dared to lay hands on her own flesh-and-blood granddaughter.
Before Scarlett could speak, Jacqueline Langley’s patience snapped.
She marched forward and landed a vicious kick squarely on Corinne. The older woman cried out in pain and collapsed backward onto the pavement.
Furious, Jacqueline spat, “Even wild animals protect their young! But you? You tried to kill your own granddaughter in broad daylight!”
“If Julian hadn't risked his life, my granddaughter would be dead!”
“A toxic woman like you deserves worse than death! And you have the nerve to beg my daughter for forgiveness? Not in this lifetime!”
Corinne curled up on the ground in agony, sobbing so hard her entire body convulsed.
