He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 61

Talia finished her rant and slammed the door shut with a resounding *bang* that left the doorframe trembling.

Yardley's expression instantly grew grim.

The sheer amount of information in Talia's furious outburst was staggering. He couldn't process it all at once.

She had found a richer, more powerful man?

And this guy had bought a luxury house for their daughter?

How was that possible?

In his mind, ever since Scarlett married him, she had maintained an intense work schedule. Her social circle was simple, almost transparent.

He had never seen her get too close to any other man—except Gordon Wyatt.

Recalling Gordon's cryptic words the other day, a suffocating wave of dread surged in Yardley's chest.

Could Gordon have feelings for Scarlett?

They were high school classmates, and their relationship back then was extraordinarily close.

Gordon had mentioned Scarlett in front of him more than once, praising her as the most independent, unpretentious woman he had ever met.

Yardley got back into his car, his fingers stiff as he dialed Gordon's number.

This was the first time Yardley had reached out since their last heated argument.

The phone rang for a long time before Gordon finally picked up. His tone was as distant as a wall of ice.

"What is it?"

The sheer alienation made Yardley deeply uncomfortable. He cut straight to the chase.

"Where is Scarlett? Did you hide her?"

Gordon scoffed, his voice dripping with disbelief.

"She's your wife. Why the hell would I hide her?"

Yardley was choked into silence.

Gordon was right. Scarlett was his wife, yet lately, he felt like she had completely slipped from his grasp, as if she had never belonged to him in the first place.

Softening his tone, Yardley tried to fish for more information.

"She is at the company. She's called a meeting with all her subordinates and is discussing disbanding the project team."

Yardley felt a vein pop in his forehead.

"What did you just say? Disband the team? Why? Who gave her permission to do that?"

"She said she's resigning and asked her team what they wanted to do. They all said they'd follow her. Boss, the blueprints for Zenith Tower just came out. If the entire design department walks out right now, we're going to face massive difficulties with the construction phase..."

Yardley pressed hard against his aching brow, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly low register.

"I'm heading over now. Go stop that meeting immediately."

Everything was spinning out of control. He had never felt so powerless.

His chest heaved with fury. Just then, his phone buzzed incessantly with a rapid succession of text messages. They were bank notifications.

Ever since he had given Scarlett that supplementary credit card, the balance had been steadily dropping.

The expenses were wild:

Designer clothes, premium baby supplies, high-end lingerie, luxury salon treatments, top-tier jewelry from auction houses, rare antiques... But this latest one was the most outrageous. Just a moment ago, Scarlett had swiped the card to purchase an entire office building.
