Scarlett took the phone and rapidly scrolled through the chat history.
Talia had him saved under the name "Virgil Reed." As Scarlett read, she quickly mental-noted all the key details the man had strategically dropped into their conversations.
Her immediate impression? The guy was a professional sweet-talker. He knew exactly what to say to make a woman feel like she was the center of his universe.
He would occasionally order Talia food delivery, send her flowers, or transfer her small amounts of cash just to be cute. He was providing massive emotional value, but he was doing it using pocket change.
Talia was an only child, doted on by her parents her whole life. She was innocent, had zero dating experience, and was the exact target demographic for these low-effort romantic gestures.
But to Scarlett, his motives felt incredibly sinister. He kept aggressively pushing Talia to visit Tyrellia Country. He also constantly sent her photos of his "luxury" apartment and his "high-end" lifestyle, trying desperately to prove he was rich.
There's a saying: the more someone lacks something, the more they feel the need to show it off.
Truly wealthy people don't spend their days aggressively photographing their apartments to impress strangers, because to them, it's just normal life. The harder he flexed, the more obvious it was that it was a facade.
The longer Scarlett read, the louder the alarm bells rang in her head. But looking up at Talia's hopeful, starry-eyed face, she didn't have the heart to crush her dreams right then and there.
Besides, Talia was bound to fall in love eventually. And what if Scarlett was wrong? What if this guy actually was a decent person?
Deciding to tread lightly, Scarlett handed the phone back with a casual smile. "He seems nice enough on paper, but the internet is full of illusions. You need to keep your guard up. Plus, shouldn't a real gentleman fly out here to see you for the first time? That's basic effort."
Talia giggled. "I said the exact same thing! But he said he's swamped with business right now and can't get away. He mentioned it's peak tourist season in Tyrellia Country, so if I fly to him, he can take me around to relax. He promised to cover my hotel, my food, everything. I won't have to lift a finger."
Talia nudged Scarlett's shoulder playfully. "He even said I could bring my best friend along, and he'd pay for her too! See? He's super generous. Don't you think?"
Scarlett offered a tight smile but didn't say anything else.
