He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 64

She stopped right in front of Yardley, lifting her chin to meet her brother's eyes. "Resigning is a personal choice. Since Scarlett wants to leave, there's no reason not to approve it."

Yardley was furious.

"Clarissa, do you know what you're doing? Scarlett isn't just an employee, she's..."

"She's your wife?" Clarissa cut in coldly. "But for the last five years, haven't you always bragged about treating everyone equally at work without any special privileges? I certainly haven't seen you treat her like a wife. Am I wrong?"

Yardley was struck dumb.

He never imagined that the first person to publicly support Scarlett's departure would be his sister, who had historically been the harshest to her.

Scarlett paused as well, looking at her sister-in-law in surprise.

Given how far things had escalated, she wasn't naive enough to think anyone in the Flynn family genuinely wanted to help her.

Perhaps Clarissa was just eager to get rid of her so Sylvia could take her place?

Recently, she had dug deep into Sylvia's relationship with the family.

Though Sylvia had been adopted by Yardley's aunt, Gwen Quinn, she had essentially grown up in the Flynn household, and Yardley's three sisters absolutely adored her.

Scarlett didn't care about Clarissa's motives. Since the woman was taking her side, she would use the momentum.

Scarlett immediately spoke up, fighting for the maximum benefits for herself and her team.

"It's a good thing she's divorcing you. Being married to you is basically like being a widow. Not only do you neglect her, but you use your position as her boss to exploit every last ounce of her labor. If I were Scarlett, I would've divorced you centuries ago. Having a kid for you? What a joke."

Yardley was utterly flabbergasted. He stared at Clarissa, his eyes dark and furious. "Clarissa, do you even hear yourself?"

A mocking smile played on Clarissa's lips as she spoke in a sarcastic tone. "I'm only holding back because you're my brother. I'm being extremely polite right now. Tell me, did I say a single thing wrong?"

Yardley's mouth twitched violently, but he was so choked up he couldn't form a single word.

Listening from the sidelines, Scarlett's eyes flashed with shock. She instinctively glanced at Clarissa, just as Clarissa looked her way.

As their eyes met, Scarlett caught a glimpse of something unexpected on Clarissa's usually arrogant, dismissive face—a look of pity she couldn't quite understand.
