Clarissa... was pitying her?
How was that possible?
Clarissa was famously known in the industry as the "Ice Queen." Her management style was even more domineering, dictatorial, and ruthless than Yardley's. She kept men at arm's length, remained staunchly unmarried, and was dubbed the "Iron Lady" of the architecture world.
Over her five years at the company, Scarlett couldn't even count how many times Clarissa had made things difficult for her, pointing fingers and cursing her out. She had honestly believed Clarissa hated her more than anyone else in the family.
Yet here was this seemingly cold-blooded woman, showing an uncharacteristic trace of humanity right as Scarlett was about to divorce Yardley.
Unsure of how to respond, Scarlett chose to remain silent.
Surprisingly, Clarissa took the initiative and walked right up to her.
"If you need to quit, quit. If you need to divorce, divorce. As a woman, never let a man drag you down. Look at how pathetic your life has been these past five years. Only recently have you finally started acting like a real woman."
Scarlett was stunned into silence.
Clarissa continued to extend her olive branch. "I've fast-tracked your resignation. As the top executive director of the Flynn Group, I have that authority. Now, go rest. Spend time with your baby. If you get lonely and need a man, let me know. I'll introduce you to someone."
Since she had put it that way, Scarlett had nothing more to say.
"Alright. Then I won't politely decline. Thank you, Ms. Flynn."
She had fully expected a brutal tug-of-war with Yardley over her resignation and had mentally prepared herself for the worst.
She never expected Clarissa to swoop in like a guardian angel and resolve the crisis effortlessly.
Feeling thoroughly refreshed, Scarlett grabbed her box and turned to leave without another word.
But she had barely taken two steps when she heard hurried footsteps behind her.
Suddenly, Yardley grabbed her arm and yanked her forcefully into his embrace in front of everyone.
His deep, furious voice rumbled above her head.
"Don't listen to her nonsense. Your resignation has to go through me. Even if she's a director, she has no right to bypass me and approve it."
At this moment, Yardley was a mix of rage and desperation.
Whenever Scarlett went against him, it felt like the entire world was turning against him, too.
