Helena's expression shifted drastically. She tried to stop Sophia, but it was too late.
"Helena will have people who love her even without you, Mr. Hayes. If you ever let her get hurt, I'll personally seek justice for her!" Sophia's final words were an outright warning.
Having dropped the bomb, Sophia turned calmly to Helena. "I'll be fine, don't worry about me. We're in public; everyone is watching," she said, trying to soothe her friend's panic.
She offered a reassuring smile. "Head back. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay," Helena finally managed to reply stiffly.
Sophia left without another backward glance. Throughout the entire exchange, Sebastian had simply stood there with one hand casually in his pocket, the other holding Helena's.
Helena looked up at him defensively. "Sophia didn't mean anything by it, she was just standing up for me. She's protected me since the day we met. If she offended you, don't take it out on her. If you're angry, take it out on me."
She meant every word.
Instead of exploding, Sebastian looked at her unhurriedly. "Are you afraid I'll cause trouble for your friend?" he asked flatly.
She didn't answer, but her tense posture was an admission in itself.
"Do you think she was telling the truth?" he pressed.
Helena met his gaze, refusing to back down. "Isn't it the truth?"
Unlike her earlier hesitant texts, she was growing aggressive. She was panicking.
Helena watched him out of the corner of her eye. If she had been the one on the other end, she would have taken his silence as a cue to back off immediately. Given how much Janetta loved him, she usually played it safe. Provoking him when he was already ignoring her would only backfire.
But Helena sensed that Sebastian had absolutely no intention of giving Janetta a way out. The phone buzzed violently on the dashboard, and he didn't even glance at it.
"Aren't you going to answer?" Helena asked over the noise.
His expression grew unreadable. "Do you want me to?"
She dodged the trap. "It's loud. The buzzing is annoying."
