Helena nodded. "Okay."
Without another word, she lowered her head and started cleaning.
Because of her pregnancy, she moved slowly, but she was methodical.
Arthur didn't rush her.
Right now, Grace and Sebastian were entirely focused on Janetta.
A doctor was inside the room, treating Janetta's supposed burns.
Anyone with eyes could see Helena's injuries were a hundred times worse.
Anyone with eyes knew Janetta had caused the accident on purpose.
But Sebastian acted completely blind to it all.
Arthur had always liked Helena.
If Sebastian's grandpa were still alive, there was no way she would be treated like this.
So, whenever the others weren't looking, Arthur quietly helped her with the chores.
Helena noticed and felt deeply grateful.
It took her a long time to finally finish scrubbing the kitchen and the dining room.
Before she could even catch her breath, Grace summoned her to the master bedroom.
Her job? To wait on Janetta.
It was deliberate.
Throwing her straight to the wolves.
Throughout it all, Sebastian sat on the sidelines, watching with cold indifference.
It was silent permission, giving Janetta free rein to do whatever she pleased.
Janetta played the sweet, polite victim on the surface, but every request was a hidden blade aimed at Helena.
If the milk wasn't too hot, she made Helena reheat it five times.
And in the end, she didn't take a single sip.
Or she would scrunch her nose and claim Helena's smell was making her nauseous.
No matter how many times Helena changed her clothes or showered, Janetta's complaints never ceased.
Grace backed Janetta up every step of the way.
She constantly made snide, sarcastic remarks aimed at Helena.
Life at the Hayes Estate grew more agonizing by the day.
Helena wasn't allowed to sleep in, and by nightfall, she was kept on her feet until the early hours.
Sebastian watched every second of it.
Even her toes were bleeding from being on her feet for so long.
Janetta's demands were becoming more frequent and utterly deranged.
Not just Helena—even the maids were starting to reach their breaking point.
At first, Grace had been eager to dote on her future daughter-in-law, but even she had grown tired of the drama, using a trip to Europe as an excuse to escape.
Helena didn't care about Grace's absence.
But from the whispered gossip among the maids, she pieced something together.
Janetta's vision had been steadily declining, making her incredibly volatile.
And all of that unhinged rage was channeled directly into punishing Helena.
Whenever Sebastian wasn't around during the day, Janetta dropped the act entirely, behaving like an absolute tyrant.
Helena was covered in an assortment of fresh bruises and cuts.
Every time Arthur saw her, he could only let out a helpless sigh.
"I'll go get the medical kit for you," Arthur offered softly. "Leave the rest of this. I'll finish it later."
"Thank you," she replied politely.
But she didn't stop working, refusing to drag him into her mess.
Arthur seemed to understand her stubbornness and didn't try to stop her again.
