Only after finishing the mind-numbing, repetitive tasks did Helena finally sit down to bandage her wounds.
Arthur stood quietly by her side.
She paused, looking up at him.
"Arthur, do you know how Wynn is doing?" she asked softly.
"Mr. Hayes forbade anyone from asking, so I really don't know," Arthur replied honestly.
She nodded, hesitating for a moment.
After a long silence, she spoke again. "Could I use your phone to call the sanatorium?"
"That..." Arthur looked conflicted.
"Or maybe you could ask for me," she added. "I just have this awful feeling. I need to know if he's okay. But if it's too risky for you, please don't worry about it."
She refused to let her own desperation bring ruin to him.
She understood the stakes perfectly well.
And it was exactly this selfless nature that made Arthur's heart ache for her.
"I'll make the call for you," he finally agreed.
A glimmer of hope flared in her eyes.
It was the first trace of light she had shown in weeks.
Right in front of her, Arthur dialed the sanatorium to ask about Wynn's condition.
Helena held her breath the entire time, too nervous to speak.
She watched his face closely, noting that he seemed perfectly calm.
She figured that meant Wynn was safe, right?
"You've got a lot of nerve!" A vicious voice suddenly sliced through the air.
Sebastian had returned out of nowhere.
His face was a mask of pure fury as he glared at Arthur.
Arthur turned paper-white, terrified out of his wits, and immediately hung up the phone.
"I made him do it. This has nothing to do with him," Helena said, stepping in front of the butler without a second thought.
Sebastian let out a cruel sneer, staring at her as she shielded the older man.
"Who gave you permission to do this?" he demanded, keeping his wrath focused entirely on Arthur.
"Have you been at this estate so long that you think the rules don't apply to you? Do you honestly think my respect for my grandfather means I'll tolerate you defying me?"
His words were ruthless and direct.
"Since you love making your own decisions so much, as of today, you no longer work for the Hayes family."
Firing Arthur was just a tactic to force her to submit and beg.
She looked him dead in the eye. "Sebastian, this was my fault. Don't punish an innocent man."
Only then did his gaze shift to her.
He didn't blink.
The hostility in his eyes burned as intensely as ever.
He was cornering her, step by step.
Arthur opened his mouth to speak several times, but no words came out.
He was barely holding his own life together; how could he protect her?
"Are you giving me orders?" Sebastian asked, his voice dripping with ice.
She stared back at him, unmoving.
Her stomach was heavily swollen now.
In the final trimester, her pregnancy had become undeniable.
Looking down, she couldn't even see her own feet anymore.
Every single movement she made was agonizingly difficult.
