He Never Loved Me Until the Day I Finally Left Him novel Chapter 33

Inside the apartment.

"I think you have the wrong place. I don't know who you are," Helena said, her voice completely steady.

"Seven years ago, this apartment was put up as collateral for a five-million-dollar loan, with monthly interest payments. The payments have lapsed for the last two months. According to the contract, we have the right to seize the property," the man stated bluntly.

He shoved a thick mortgage agreement right in her face.

Frowning, Helena flipped through the pages. It was undeniably a loan document.

The address listed was for the exact North Hill Road apartment she was standing in.

But she had absolutely no memory of this.

When she flipped to the final page and saw the signature, the blood drained from her face.

The guarantor was her mother.

The year Helena married Sebastian, her mother had given her five million dollars as a safety net.

She had wanted to make sure Helena wouldn't enter the Hayes family completely powerless and penniless.

Helena had asked where the money came from.

Her mother had claimed she cashed out an old life insurance policy.

Helena hadn't questioned it. The Wallace family had never been billionaires, but they had always been comfortably wealthy.

Now, the devastating truth was staring her in the face. Her mother had mortgaged her own home to secure that five million.

And Helena hadn't even been able to use it as a safety net, because her mother had fallen critically ill shortly after.

Almost all of that money had gone toward medical bills and plugging the massive financial holes the Wallace family was sinking into at the time.

She had refused to beg Sebastian for help.

She had refused to let him see her look so pathetic.
