It was a hatred that cut straight to the bone.
It gave him the chilling sensation that Janetta was the one desperate for blood, not Helena.
Sebastian lowered his gaze, studying her in utter silence.
Being watched so intensely made Janetta instinctively tense up.
But on the surface, she kept her mask perfectly in place.
"Do you really hate Helena that much?" he finally asked.
"I didn't use to," Janetta took a deep, shuddering breath before answering him word by word.
"But how could I not hate her now? She stole the life that was supposed to be mine. I could have lived with that."
"But she killed my baby. I will never forgive that."
"And while my child is gone, she gets to peacefully give birth to yours."
"As long as that baby exists, you two will always be tied together. That child will always look for its mother."
"Under these circumstances, am I supposed to just adore her? If I weren't furious, I'd be insane, wouldn't I?"
Janetta's voice dripped with raw sorrow as she looked up at him.
Her eyes swam with a profound, shattered disappointment.
Her words were thick with devastating emotion.
And just like that, Sebastian's suspicions began to dissolve.
Because everything she said made perfect logical sense.
"I was just asking. Just be a good girl and stop overthinking. Your only job right now is to take care of yourself. I'll handle the rest."
Sebastian gave her his word. "I won't protect her. You said it yourself—the law will give you the justice you deserve, alright?"
His tone had completely softened.
Janetta leaned into his chest, offering a heavy, satisfied "Mm."
"Seb, stay with me, please? When you're not here, I get so scared," she pleaded softly.
"Alright," Sebastian agreed, unable to refuse her in this state.
Whether she had worn herself out from the tantrum or something else entirely...
Janetta drifted off to sleep surprisingly fast.
Sebastian waited until her breathing leveled out before he quietly stood up and left the room.
But Janetta wasn't deeply asleep.
The moment he moved, she was wide awake.
She knew she couldn't afford to wait anymore.
She looked down and let out a dry, self-deprecating laugh.
She had sat on the throne of 'Mrs. Hayes' for seven years—and for what?
It was an empty crown.
She dutifully stood up and began walking toward the front door.
But just as she reached the threshold, she stopped dead in her tracks. Sebastian was standing right in front of her.
Even Arthur looked surprised.
"Mr. Hayes," Arthur greeted respectfully.
Sebastian offered a curt nod.
"Madam is heading to her prenatal checkup. The Doctor ordered her to go every two days to monitor for any complications," Arthur quickly explained.
Helena didn't utter a single word.
"Not feeling well?" Sebastian asked quietly, noticing her silence.
"No. It's just a routine checkup," she replied flatly.
She had absolutely zero energy left to argue with him.
She was simply too exhausted.
