After a moment of silence, the doctor decided to speak frankly and lay the facts out for Sebastian.
"Furthermore, if Mrs. Hayes continues in her current state, it will trigger a cascade of issues. If her cornea remains infected, harvesting it for Ms. Ramirez won't do much good anyway."
The doctor didn't sugarcoat it.
Both of Janetta's eyes were failing.
Helena only had one viable cornea left to give.
The level of restored vision wouldn't even come close to what they had originally projected.
And now, if Helena's infection persisted.
Even if Janetta took the cornea, it would be entirely futile.
"So, if you plan to harvest Mrs. Hayes's cornea for Ms. Ramirez, it needs to happen as soon as possible."
His words were cruel, but they were the medical reality.
The doctor said nothing more.
The final decision remained entirely in Sebastian's hands.
If this had been the past, Sebastian wouldn't have hesitated for a split second.
But right now, an eerie stillness settled over him.
His gaze stayed fixed on the doctor.
It was a long time before he calmly asked, "What's the absolute deadline?"
The doctor understood immediately. He was asking about Helena's cornea, not Janetta's timeline.
He replied steadily, "Within a week. Unless Mrs. Hayes's condition miraculously improves. Otherwise, it must be removed. The chances of improvement are extremely slim, given how severe the inflammation is; the infection simply won't subside."
So, one week was the absolute limit.
It could even happen sooner.
Sebastian merely offered a faint hum of acknowledgment, saying nothing else.
In the middle of their exchange, Carter Miles walked up to them.
His face was stern as he looked at his boss. "Mr. Hayes, the police are here."
Sebastian's eyes darkened, and he nodded.
The doctor tactfully excused himself and walked away.
Sebastian showed barely any emotional reaction.
"Unless Ms. Ramirez drops the charges," the officer added, offering the only possible loophole.
If Janetta withdrew the lawsuit, the murder charge would vanish, and the arrest warrant would be voided.
Helena would walk free.
The implied message was clear: Sebastian needed to talk to Janetta.
Otherwise, this would become an endless, inescapable loop.
Sebastian completely understood the officer's angle.
He gave a curt nod. "I'll go talk to her."
The officer breathed a visible sigh of relief.
They didn't linger at the hospital, having only come to fulfill standard procedure.
Shortly after, the police issued an official public notice.
It confirmed that Helena was still undergoing emergency treatment in the ICU and was currently unfit for detention.
