Helena nodded numbly. "Okay."
The doctor returned shortly after and performed a final evaluation.
Helena complied like a lifeless doll, showing zero emotional response to the invasive checks.
Her eerie calmness only made Julian's stomach churn harder.
He kept his brows furrowed the entire time.
Once she was cleared, she asked to leave, and Julian immediately drove her back to the apartment.
The car ride was suffocatingly quiet.
Julian kept glancing over at her from the driver's seat, opening his mouth to speak several times, but ultimately swallowing his words.
It wasn't until he parked the car outside their building that Helena finally turned to look at him.
"We can't get married tomorrow," she said softly, breaking the silence.
Julian looked into her eyes. They were completely dead, void of any light or emotion.
He clenched his jaw. "Did Sebastian threaten you?"
He wanted to ask more, but he was terrified that probing further would shatter her entirely.
Helena didn't look away. Her voice was terrifyingly calm.
"We aren't legally divorced."
Julian's brow snapped together. "How is that possible? You both went to The Civil Affairs Bureau and signed the paperwork."
"I don't know," she murmured.
She truly didn't know how he had hijacked the bureaucratic system.
But she knew one thing for certain: if Sebastian decided their divorce decree wasn't going to be printed, it wasn't going to be printed.
But why was he doing this?
A sudden, broken laugh escaped her lips.
Sebastian despised her. Keeping her chained to him just to torture her and make her miserable was entirely on brand for him.
As long as they were legally bound, she could never escape his shadow.
He could humiliate her and destroy her life whenever he pleased.
Their marriage had started with her desperate refusal to let him go.
