The silence held until the doctor walked in to check on Helena. Catching sight of Sebastian, the doctor tensed, clearly afraid of walking into another explosive fight.
Before the medical professional could speak, Sebastian stood up, his demeanor perfectly controlled. "How is my wife doing?" he asked, his voice steady but carrying a note of protective tension.
Helena heard it. She stayed quiet, letting the moment wash over her. It had been so, so long since Sebastian had shown any concern for her well-being.
"Mr. Hayes, Mrs. Hayes is stable," the doctor said carefully. "The baby is completely safe. There's nothing to worry about."
"I expect your absolute best. I will not accept any complications with my wife or my child," Sebastian ordered, his tone leaving no room for debate.
"Of course, sir," the doctor nodded quickly.
Helena watched the entire exchange. Every word out of Sebastian's mouth was centered on her and the baby. She knew his sudden change in attitude had to have an ulterior motive. But for a fleeting moment, she didn't want to dig for the truth.
She knew she was lying to herself, but she was just too exhausted to fight anymore. At least do it for the baby, she rationalized. It was the only way she could find peace with her decision.
The tension drained from her shoulders, and Sebastian immediately noticed the shift. After the doctor left, he sat back down on the edge of the bed.
Helena didn't pull away this time.
"Once you're stable, I'll take you home," he murmured, his voice adopting a coaxing warmth.
She didn't agree, but she didn't refuse either.
