Over the years, Grace Dale had made Helena's life a living hell. Beyond despising Helena's modest background, Grace's primary grievance had always been the lack of an heir. Though she was spiteful, she hadn't escalated to physical harm.
"Lena, just have the baby. Be good," he finished softly.
He had even dropped her full name, calling her 'Lena' with a tenderness she hadn't heard in years.
This sudden rush of affection broke down the last of Helena's fortress. Her lips parted, her voice a little dry when she finally whispered, "Okay."
A wave of relief washed over Sebastian. As long as she wasn't actively trying to run, everything was back under his control. He kept his expression perfectly schooled.
"When you're ready, I'll take you home," he promised.
"Okay," she answered, giving him a definitive answer this time.
She figured she could compromise for the baby's sake. After all the fighting, he had finally agreed to let her work. That removed their biggest point of conflict. She took a deep breath, trying to push down the lingering anxiety in her chest, though a faint unease remained. The newfound peace between them was intoxicating, making it dangerously easy to let her guard down.
"Get some rest. I'll be right here," Sebastian murmured.
Helena was completely drained. The emotional whiplash of the day had left her exhausted, her mind practically shutting down. She drifted off to sleep almost instantly.
For the next few days, Helena remained in the hospital. She had assumed Sebastian's promise to stay was just lip service, but he actually remained by her side. While he wasn't hovering over her every second, the stark contrast to his usual coldness was undeniable.
Human hearts are made of flesh. She truly began to believe he had changed. Because of this, the atmosphere between them warmed, feeling almost like the early days of their relationship—perhaps even better.
For the past few days, Janetta Ramirez had seemingly vanished off the face of the earth. She hadn't called Sebastian once. Helena wasn't naive enough to think Janetta didn't know Sebastian was here with her. But why the silence? The absolute lack of drama felt like the eerie calm before a hurricane, sending a quiet spike of dread through her.
Shortly after Sebastian left, the butler bustled in, beaming as he set up a spread of exquisite food. Helena ate quietly until she was mostly full.
"I'm done," she told the butler. "I think I'll go for a walk."
The butler didn't try to stop her. Sebastian hadn't restricted her movements. Over the past few days, whenever Sebastian was free, he had escorted her to the small garden behind the hospital himself, noting that light exercise was good for the pregnancy.
Helena changed into comfortable clothes and made her way out of the room, following her usual route.
At that exact moment, down the hall, Sebastian answered his phone.
