The Reefs?
The words hit Sebastian like a freight train.
His mind instantly flashed back to the car crash years ago.
Helena's vehicle had plummeted off a cliff, exploding in a fiery wreck.
The base of that cliff had been jagged with deadly rocks.
Heart pounding, Sebastian unlocked his phone and opened the file.
The woman in the photo was completely unrecognizable, her face a brutalized mess of torn tissue and blood.
He stared at the screen in absolute silence for an eternity.
His eyes tracked every single agonizing detail of the trauma.
Suddenly, his pupils dilated.
His thumb frantically double-tapped the screen, zooming in on the side profile.
There, barely visible near the ear, was The Birthmark.
Because these were forensic-level surgical reference photos, Vance had documented every millimeter of her physical state to protect himself against malpractice claims.
That birthmark was burned into Sebastian's brain.
The original Helena had the exact same one.
They had slept together for years.
He knew every inch of her body, and he specifically remembered that mark because that spot behind her ear was wildly sensitive.
Even if their marriage had been a warzone, he couldn't just erase that kind of intimate, physical memory.
But the woman playing Helena right now? She didn't have it.
He had taken her to bed enough times recently to know her body perfectly.
Her ears were just as sensitive, but her skin was completely flawless. No mark.
His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, perfectly masking the chaotic hurricane of realization tearing through his mind.
"Mr. Hayes?" Vance asked nervously, shifting in his chair. "Is something wrong with the file?"
"The Helena I know doesn't have this birthmark," Sebastian stated coldly, spinning his phone around to face the surgeon.
The scar was unavoidable.
The fact that the current Helena's stomach was perfectly smooth had been the one detail that consistently derailed his theories.
And now, Vance had just handed him the missing puzzle piece.
A catastrophic wave of shock and vindication violently crashed through his chest.
Yet, outwardly, Sebastian sat like a marble statue.
"Did she have any other injuries?" he asked, his voice chillingly steady.
"Nothing structural. Just some superficial abrasions and lacerations consistent with a severe impact. I did some basic cosmetic closures for those, and that was it," Vance concluded.
That was all Sebastian needed.
He knew the surgeon was officially out of useful information.
He stood up, towering over the desk, radiating an overwhelming, dark authority.
"Thank you for your time, Professor Vance. But I strongly suggest you forget this conversation ever happened," Sebastian warned softly.
