She took a step back.
He turned back to comfort Janetta. "Jana, since I'm here, I'm not going to let anyone mistreat you. You're pregnant. Don't get worked up. I'll handle this, okay?"
Pregnant, mistreated, Jana...
Piecing the words together, it all clicked into place for Helena.
Janetta really was pregnant, and the baby was his.
"Sebastian, her baby is yours, isn't it?" she asked again, tilting her chin up to look at him.
She looked haughty.
She knew it was just her armor.
But it didn't stop the excruciating pain piercing her chest.
Helena's eyes locked onto him in complete silence.
She was waiting for him to deny it.
If he offered just one word of denial, she felt she could force herself to believe him.
"Don't you think you owe me an explanation?" Her voice grew even colder.
She walked right up to him and grabbed his hand.
He looked down at her, then used his large, calloused hand to forcefully pry her fingers off his arm.
He glared at her, his eyes brutally cold.
"Watch your attitude, Helena..." he barked.
But Janetta eagerly interrupted him.
She looked at Helena with a gaze that feigned guilt but harbored a mocking, triumphant gleam.
"May I call you Helena? At the wrap party the other night, we both had too much to drink. I couldn't control my feelings, and we slept together. This is entirely my fault. Please don't blame him. Blame me."
She sounded incredibly generous, her voice trembling with unshed tears.
"I know what I did was wrong. But I don't have a choice. My health won't survive an abortion, so I have to keep the baby. I'm so sorry, Helena," she sobbed, apologizing profusely.
