"When his ex-wife was transferred from prison years ago, she was involved in a crash and supposedly died in the fiery wreckage. No one else knew the truth behind that, so how do you know the details with such terrifying accuracy?"
"And then there's the daughter I shared with her. Why are you so intimately familiar with everything that happened in the hospital? I doubt even his ex-wife fully knew all those details."
"Every little scheme Janetta pulled—things even I was completely oblivious to—you managed to dig up without breaking a sweat."
Losing whatever patience he had left, he dumped every piece of the puzzle right at her feet.
"Helena, the only person I know who harbors that level of deep-seated, burning hatred for her... is his ex-wife."
With his piece said, his intense gaze remained locked onto her face.
She listened to him quietly the entire time.
Her heart was racing, her palms slick with a cold sweat.
But on the outside, she maintained a terrifying level of composure.
"Coincidentally, his ex-wife was also named Helena. And the two of you share an uncanny resemblance," he continued after a brief pause.
"And then? Are you implying that I am your dead ex-wife?" she asked evenly. "Have the dead risen from the grave, Mr. Hayes, or did your investigators simply fail to do their jobs?"
That gave him pause for a moment before a low, dark chuckle slipped past his lips.
"Helena, do you have any idea how suspiciously flawless your background is?" he said smoothly.
She furrowed her brows. "Since when is having a clean record a crime?"
"A perfectly clean slate is exactly what's wrong with it. It is impossible for any normal person to live a life entirely devoid of rumors or dirty laundry," he stated emphatically.
She offered no rebuttal, simply letting him talk.
He didn't mind her silence. "Do you really need me to spell out the rest for you?"
"Be my guest," she said, visibly relaxing her tense posture.
All her underlying anxiety had stemmed from the desperate need to keep her identity a secret.
