The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the shocked, probing stares from the lobby.

The car was packed with people leaving work. Perhaps worried she'd get jostled, Jarrod Fuller pulled her against him, shielding most of her body beneath his arm.

They were so close that Stella Quinn could clearly smell the crisp scent of cedar radiating from him.

Ever since Jarrod's sudden appearance, Stella's mind had been a daze.

It had all happened too fast, leaving her zero time to mentally prepare.

Still, she was grateful he had shown up.

Whatever his reasons, in that moment, she had felt the warmth of his protection.

The elevator quickly reached the ground floor.

Stella let Jarrod guide her out.

His driver was already waiting and swiftly opened the car door for them.

Had Jarrod gone upstairs specifically to pick her up from work?

Reading her mind, Jarrod said nonchalantly, "Your foot makes it hard for you to walk."

"I planned to send a driver to The Sterling Residences this morning, but you never replied to my message. I figured you took the day off and were sleeping in."

Stella blinked in surprise. He had to be talking about the 'Are you asleep?' text from last night.

"I didn't check my phone when I woke up. Then things got busy this morning, and I forgot to reply."

Jarrod didn't say whether he believed her excuse or not as he helped her into the car.

Stella could sense it—ever since they returned from the family estate, Jarrod had been intentionally trying to mend their relationship.

He had brought up the idea of staying married, proactively texted her, and even came to the office to pick her up.

So, was the rumor about Chloe Huxley's pregnancy true? What exactly was Jarrod thinking?

Noticing Stella's heavy expression, Summer asked, "What's wrong?"

After a moment of hesitation, Stella told her about Jarrod's proposition to stay married.

Summer gasped. "Jarrod actually said he doesn't want a divorce? I told you he didn't seem completely indifferent to you! Looks like I was right!"

Stella forced a tight smile. "His excuse was that he didn't want to waste energy looking for another suitable wife. Besides, rumor has it that Chloe is pregnant."

Summer was stunned. "Pregnant? Seriously? Did you confirm it?"

Stella shook her head. "No. But if the rumor is spreading, it's highly likely to be true."

Summer thought about it logically for a second. "Based on what you know about Jarrod, does he seem like the type of guy to knock someone up outside his marriage and dodge responsibility?"

Stella hadn't spent a ton of quality time with Jarrod, so she couldn't claim to know him deeply, but her gut instinct told her he wasn't that kind of man.

"Plus, according to you, Chloe is his sweetheart. If that were the case, wouldn't he be eager to marry her? Why would he drag his feet on divorcing you?" Summer concluded.
