Skylar offered a polite smile. "Stella, I know about Professor Julian Thorne. He's incredibly renowned in the industry. Most people can't even get an appointment with him. I can tell you've put a lot of effort into this."
"Don't worry, I'll talk Logan into meeting him. After all, I want him to get better, too."
Hearing Skylar agree so readily, Stella felt a massive weight lift off her chest.
She pulled out her phone. "Skylar, can we exchange contacts? It'll be easier to keep in touch about the follow-ups."
Skylar's smile was gentle. "Of course. And just call me Skylar. We're old classmates, after all; there's no need to be so formal."
Stella nodded. "Alright. Skylar, once I've confirmed the time with Professor Thorne, I'll send you the details and the address."
Stella would have loved to take Logan to see the professor herself, but she knew perfectly well that he wouldn't give her the time of day. He would only see it as another pathetic attempt to cling to him.
There was no need to rush. As long as Logan could regain his memory, their relationship would go back to the way it was.
...
The next day, Wednesday.
From the moment she woke up, Stella obsessively checked her phone.
Last night, she had finalized the meeting time with Professor Thorne, and Skylar had promised to bring Logan on time.
But Stella still couldn't shake her unease.
She was terrified that the professor's schedule might change, or that Skylar would suddenly back out.
After washing up, she headed downstairs.
Mrs. Higgins was at it again, grumbling about Jarrod not coming home for days.
"Running around all day and who knows what you're even busy with. You really should be spending more time focusing on your husband!"
Wasn't it completely normal for Jarrod not to come home?
"You know how you subtly called out Chloe the other day when she was proposing a toast? Well, yesterday, someone went digging around her assistant, asking if you two had some kind of beef. Guess what that assistant said?"
Stella humored her. "What did she say?"
"She actually pinned all the blame on you! She said no one gets targeted for no reason, and that if you have a problem, you should look in the mirror! It's pure victim-blaming nonsense!"
Stella instantly knew what this was about. Chloe's assistant must have seen Jarrod pull her into his arms and was now venting her frustrations on Chloe's behalf.
She didn't have the emotional bandwidth to care. Patting Cassidy on the arm, she said, "Forget it. You can't fight City Hall. Let them talk."
Cassidy was still fuming, but seeing her boss remain completely unbothered, she eventually let it go.
After finally powering through to the end of the workday, Stella pulled out her phone to check it one last time.
Still no word from Professor Thorne.
But Skylar had sent her a text.
